We do a ground beef version that we mix with mashed potatos and corn. Kinda like a shepherds pie without baking it.
Mom made the chipped beef verion every once in a while but mostly we had creamed tuna on toast with peas. yum....
My mom and aunt still swear the best pie they had was made by their Grandma. As kids they were down to the country summer cabin and all that was in the pantry was flour, sugar, lard and a can of fruit cocktail. Their dad went to get some food and grandma made a fruit cocktail pie....
We called SOS, Dried Beef Gravy, butter, flour and milk
then dried beef and sliced boiled egg simmered and
served over saltines. Subsitute peas and tuna and you have
Tuna Pea wiggle.
I remember my mother ironing Christmas wrapping paper
for the next year.
Dad didn’t like potatos or cabbage, boiled was all they ate
while in a German POW camp.
Mom would make that as well. Usually would spread the taters over the top, sprinkle with cheese and baked till browned.
Sometimes she would add cream of mushroom soup and top with biscuit mix and make a pot pie.
This thread brings back mny memories.
Peanut butter and mayo sandwiches dipped in cold milk, dandylion greens fried in bacon grease with a little vinegar or mustard, butter and sugar sandwiches.
She also made what she called ‘bum’s plate’ or stew. 2 lbs. ground beef and half a diced onion browned and drained. added 3 cans of pork & beans (undrained) and 4 Tbs dark brown sugar.
Our parents and gparents were very resourceful, weren’t they?
