The Truth about Violence: 3 Principles of Self-Defense
Sam Harris ^ | Nov 5, 2011 | Sam Harris

...Although most of us are good at recognizing danger, our instincts often lead us to behave in ways that increase our chances of being injured or killed once a threat emerges.

Principle #1: Avoid dangerous people and dangerous places.

The primary goal of self-defense is to avoid becoming the victim of violence. The best way to do this is to not be where violence is likely to occur. Of course, that’s not always possible—but without question, it is your first and best line of defense. If you visit dangerous neighborhoods at night, or hike alone and unarmed on trails near a big city, or frequent places where drunken young men gather, you are running some obvious risks. SNIP....

Principle #2: Do not defend your property.

Whatever your training, you should view any invitation to violence as an opportunity to die—or to be sent to prison for killing another human being. Violence must truly be the last resort. Thus, if someone sticks a gun in your face and demands your wallet, you should hand it over without hesitation—and run.

SNIP Principle #3: Respond immediately and escape.

If you have principles 1 and 2 firmly installed in your brain, any violence that finds you is, by definition, unavoidable. There is a tremendous power in knowing this: When you find yourself without other options, you are free to respond with full commitment.

This is the core principle of self-defense: Do whatever you can to avoid a physical confrontation, but the moment avoidance fails, attack explosively for the purposes of escape—not to mete out justice, or to teach a bully a lesson, or to apprehend a criminal. Your goal is to get away with minimum trauma (to you), while harming your attacker in any way that seems necessary to ensure your escape.

Imagine the disapointment, if you had ran and before your armed ass had gotten around the block the perp had chosen another victim, an unarmed lady with her kids, and raped her, in front of her kids.

I would rather imagine the disappointment on the aggressor's face when you pulled out your firearm and not only stopped a crime but in so doing prevented the young mother from being raped.

While were imagining things.....

And I mean you no offense.

Re “Latest Incidents” - do you know what “Mva” means? Also noticed two “unusal incidents.” Can’t imagine what those might be.

A good friend of mine was murdered a few years back

Sorry to hear that. The son of a family friend of ours prevented his own murder when while riding his H-D.

He was signaled over by a white van with three occupants (unsuspecting) One male got out, started asking questions about his bike, female leans out of van and shouts "Come on, do it already!" male pulls gun out and shoots our friend's son who only one week prior had started carrying at his dad's advice. He returns fire, emptying magazine. Male perp turns around and runs back toward van, falling down and getting back up before jumping back in van.

Friend's son shot in side, was able to get himself medical aid and police, male perp's body was found later in ditch where fellow criminals had dumped it. Turns out he'd been mortally wounded by return fire. (Arizona)

I live in Wasilla and NEVER go into Los Anchorage without a pistol under the seat. Even when I use long term parking I leave my gun in car even though there is a risk of theft. I know the gas station by Merrill field, my wife was nearly accosted there once and she never travels now without a pistol. Wish I had a .45, I carry my S/W .358 just because its small enough to hide. Sounds like you spend more time there than me, I don’t like Anchorage.

I’m guessing phony Tony was the governor? Curious about the reality show thing. There are some really bad boys up here. I heard WIllow hides the largest number of fugitives in the state.
