National polls help build a narrative or conventional wisdom - justified or no. Once that happens a candidates coverage/face time dramatically increases. He/she becomes the hot topic on all the new shows and talk radio. Campaign contributions spike. The bandwagon effect takes hold. On and on - feeding on itself...
