Newt Gingrich Promotes Use of Lean Six Sigma Business Strategy
U.S. News ^ | 11-23-2011 | Catherine Groux

In June, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich signed a pledge to adopt the Lean Six Sigma business management strategy in New Hampshire as a means to help eliminate the national debt by 2017, Politico reports. More recently, Gingrich spoke to the Heritage Foundation to promote the strategy while denouncing the new 12-member debt panel.

Additionally, Gingrich announced his plans to meet with other supporters of Lean Six Sigma to discuss ways to improve the U.S. economy.

"An intelligent Congress in a city that wanted to be intelligent would hold hearings, bring in the experts, figure out how to fundamentally change the government," he said, as quoted by Politico.

While Newt Gingrich has promoted the use of the business strategy Lean Six Sigma. the business management strategy, which discourages waste and fraud, is now gaining press coverage due to Gingrich and other politicians' praise, it has been used by business professionals across the nation for years.

Individuals who want to learn more about Lean Six Sigma have the opportunity to do so at many colleges, including Pennsylvania's Villanova University. Business professionals can earn a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Certificate during a 16-week course, according to the school's website.

Bring in experts? Sorta like a Blue Ribbon Commission?

That’s generally done to buy time and to force a difficult decision onto some person or entity that is not elected.

He sounds wobbly already.

Ain’t that the management strategy used by companies that move their manufacturing operations out of the USA and to Red China all the time?

Ping to read funny comments by folks who decide to blast Newt for Six Sigma implementation idea, yet have no real concept of what it is.

We hear a lot about Six Sigma in terms of government, but without competition, government tends to run in the range of two sigma errors. Individual agencies can be improved. However, don't expect your DMV to be a Six Sigma (which is really a 4.5-sigma) agency soon.

Good...

Make Fedzilla do ISO 9000, and 14000 and Kaizen events.

For the last 20 years Corp and Small business America has had to adapt these tools to get lean and mean to stay alive and it is not fun and can cause downsizing.

What was good for the goose...

All the effects of legislation drove up their cost and made them adapt these tools.

It is way overdue for all of Fedzilla to be doing all these things...

No, it is not. Six Sigma is a method of improving business processes in an organization to reduce error rates, build quality, and reduce rework.

When added to things such as Lean Business, or Deming’s quality programs, it can be a powerful tool. However, it can’t be adapted unless there is pressure to improve. Tell some GS-13 in HUD that she will have to improve her processes and she’ll say “Huh?” and ignore you.

Oh, certainly! But I can personally give you examples where government could be greatly more efficient with Six Sigma (Department of Agriculture, for example). Heck, anywhere there is scientific testing of any sort is a golden opportunity!

I worked at a number of companies that use it, so it'd be very hard for me to not know what it is. And yes, they moved operations to places like China and Korea, or shut down plants.

Let me guess....Cain supporters?
You trolling FR looking for such people? You'll be wasting not only your own time, but everyone else's, with all due respect.

Forget 6-sigma Newt. Control the proper variables. DEFUND socialist collectives, foreign and domestic. 8-sigma. Chart it. REDUCE the debt in less than 10 years.

I have heard him mention Six Sigma once, and it made me think I could take a closer look at him.

Six Sigma is just a codified way of looking at processes and trying to improve them. It may seem technocratic, but what is government administration but a lot of processes of turning laws into actions?

It also requires a paper trail, statistical analyses of what happens when a change is made to a process, and how it affects the bottom line.

I can’t see any downside to having government act more like a business.

MaoBama , the communist thug he is, actually turned down a proposal from IBM twice to reduce about 80 billion a year in waste in Medicare. Look it up.
