Tim Hortons to withdraw from Kandahar

Soldiers stuck in the desert heat won't be able to cool off with an iced cap at Timmies for much longer. The iconic coffee shop is shutting the doors of its location at the Canadian Forces base in Kandahar at the end of November.

Most Canadian troops have withdrawn from the country after the mission officially ended in July.

More than 230 Canadians travelled overseas to work at the overseas location over the past five years, with products shipped in sea containers from Kingston, Ont.

"It has been an absolute privilege and honour for Tim Hortons to be associated with the military and bring a little taste of home to the brave Canadian soldiers serving overseas," Paul House, Tim Hortons president and CEO, said in a statement on Thursday.

The overseas location opened in 2006, with proceeds benefiting the military community and family support programs.

It will close Nov. 29.

They are also withdrawing from Maine. The Tim Horton’s in Maine were nowhere near as good as the ones in Canada. I think they changed to try to adapt to local tastes. They should have stayed who they were, which is pretty fantastic.

Tim Hortons is the best coffee around, far better than Dunkin and starbucks. I saw Tim play hockey for my Sabres as a kid and that was one tough old man.
