Matt and Jill are already divorced, with joint custody, but Matt took the kids to the grandparents’ house regularly, from what I understand. The restraining order is necessary, because without it, Matt could take the kids without her permission. The kids are forbidden from spending the night at Jerry’s house, nor are they allowed to be with him unsupervised.
Dottie (Jerry’s wife) has just been an enabler of Jerry all these years. Why else would she contact a victim before he’s about to testify to the grand jury? He didn’t take her call, nor return the voice mail she left. It is hard to imagine that she had no inkling of Jerry’s deviant behavior. Perhaps it’s denial on her part, but I have to wonder if she didn’t suspect something amiss a long time ago, and chose to ignore it rather than confront it.
