This is a case of social worker overkill.I suppose to make their jobs seem relevant and influential, these overzealous government henchmen considered ripping a kid from his family the best solution to lead him on the road to healthy living. I cannot imagine how anyone can think this was the right thing to do. What is more surprising is how the State of Ohio could allow this Socialistic, nanny state overture to occur in a presumably democratic society. The mother could have used assistance when the boy was home and it would have cost the state much less money.

Kidding aside, I know two teenagers, who were grossly over-weight until middle school. Both sets of parents tried all kinds of diets, but none worked. Time took care of the problem on its own.

AT 13, I was 5'6" tall and weighed 150 pounds. At 14, I was 6" tall and weighed 150 pounds.

The problem took care of itself.

I remember a thread a few weeks ago where I got flamed for not agreeing that the government should have taken Elien (spelling probably off) Gonzalez from his father.
People here on FR decided that because we didn’t agree with how he chose to raise his son, we had the right to take the boy from him. I was the only one who thought it’s wasn’t our business what politics the man believed in.
But when the Fed disagrees with us, people now cry government over reach. Which is it? Should the Fed take children at will, or stay out of family’s business?

BS. Your stomach is as big as your fist. Too many people simply over eat and blame it on genetics.

Or if they do move him and because the state failed to address the health issues properly...

God forbid this child dies at the hands of the “state approved personal trainer.”

Yes...some over eat.

But there are medical conditions that can have a profound influence on weight. Something as simple as a hormonal imbalance can lead to fast weight gain with no change in diet or exercise. In fact, hormonal imbalance has been found to the be issue for many perimenpausal women.

On a personal note in the last year I’ve gained nearly 15 unexplained pounds. I eat right and get lots of exercise and I do mean lots of exercise...yet the pounds keep coming. Why? I am perimenpausal.

“Too many people simply over eat and blame it on genetics.”

I agree that too many people eat poorly and blame it on genetics. However, that does not mean that a metabolic disorder is not a factor in *this* case. This case appears extreme and would indicate there is something beyond common overeating.

Actually as the parent of an adopted metabolically morbidly obese child, I have done some research in this area. There are studies that show that abortion is the option 65% of the time for parents who have been told that their child might be obese.

That’s what I got told when I gained 20 in a year with perimenopausal weight gain...........not by FReepers but by others. Sucks doesn’t it ? Yeah, big time sucks. And it does NOT want to come off no matter what ~ ugh.

I know parents who allow their children to eat WHENEVER they are hungry.

It just would have been easier to not allow your kid to eat anything they want in sight.

I haven’t seen anyone respond to your question, but I wanted to let you know that I agree with you 100% on Elian Gonzalez. You’re not alone on that one. His mother died, so obviously his father has the right to his son. Period. You live your way and leave me alone to live my way. Anything else to me seems hypocritical, IMHO.

Create new Controlled Substance Act of 1970 categories for various foods.

Have Moochelle do it by Executive Order.

Create a War on Foods.

Create an offshoot of the DEA: the Food Enforcement Administration.

Get the FEA lots of high tech surveillance and SWAT-like anti-personnel equipment, and throw out due process.

Have them partner with a newly-expanded BATFE that now sports an F (for Food) at the end.

Much food comes from Mexico - get ICE involved.

Obesity is a national security issue - get DHS involved.

Kids get much food at schools - get DOEd involved.

Have the FDA require that all food be dispensed at government facilities with a doctor’s Rx, and that the growing and processing and packaging and distribution of all food (and water?) be controlled by the Federal government.

Have the FBI coordinate with the other agencies to insure that the inevitable graft and crime is punished, except when politicians and bureaucrats are involved.

Pass a new stimulus package - say $4.8T - to get the ball rolling.

Yeah. That’s the ticket.
