Is he in major danger? If not, the DSS (or equivalent) shouldn't have taken him away. That needs to be a last resort.

Other factors not given in the article.
1. How tall is he. Some 8-9 year olds are tall, almost as tall as me. There's a difference between 5'8 and 200, 5'0 200, and 4'6 200.

2. Genetics. It's often a copout, but it is one factor. I'm from a big family. Almost all of us on one side of the family are well over 200 and most of us look like we are about 25 pounds lighter than we are.

3. Does he exercise? Or does he sit on his butt and play John Madden Football.

There's a lot of things not given in the article. Based on what is given though, I'm against taking the kids from parents in non abusive and non neglect ville situations. This sets a bad precedence. With Obamacare around the corner, along with Rick Snyder types wanting "Obesity" based on the extremely flawed BMI standard, reported to them, this is potentially big trouble.

B.S. back to you. Stomach size isn’t relevant unless it has been artificially changed. People vary in what they can burn. Some enviable people (possibly, depending on what climate they live in) even have “brown fat” which burns energy just sitting there. Others can walk all day and burn the same average calories as the normal person who is a couch potato.

If this thesis is largely true for even a minority, general practitioners and internists should be hollering about liver illnesses spiking. It shouldn’t take a private, ax-grinding theoretical study to bring it to light.

Are there doctors in the house who can vouch for this phenomenon?

If the child was not down to normal weight within one year in a foster home, I would support a hundred million dollar suit against the government for kidnapping.

A second parallel issue with the predominance of sugar in the modern diet is the loss of nutrition in chemically raised foods. One pound of Organic tomatoes contains the same nutrients as 20 pounds of Supermarket tomatoes. People are cramming so many calories in their face in a vain search for nutrition.

Empty calories topped with sugar is the modern diet, and obesity is the result.

At least there is a little good news, which came about because of an unexpected event during a clinical trial.

A new drug required blood liver chemicals to be monitored in the human test subjects. Needing a placebo, the researchers decided to use Vitamin E. Unexpectedly, of their *control* group that had fatty liver, without changing their diet, the Vitamin E normalized their livers.

Which ruined the experiment, but opened a new door to research. Subsequently it was found that Vitamin E can reverse fatty liver.

However, Vitamin E can produce its own problems. But this was already known, and it was also known that also taking a selenium supplement *with* the Vitamin E neutralized its deleterious effects.

EBH is probably a die-hard Michigan fan and is obviously still enjoying taking a dig at anything Ohio after this past weekend’s football game.

Too bad FR got rid of the blink and marquee tags... none of this would have happened! :)

But back to the story... the kid needs real food and exercise, but that’s too “difficult” (especially if he’s been fed mostly frankenfood and exercise equals sets and reps of reaching in the cheezy poofs bag). Instead, the wise govt. will toss him into foster care which will traumatize him into sneaking massive quantities of junk food for comfort.

The war on obesity is designed to create dependent fatties. It’s not the healthy who demand Obamacare, but the sick. Government food guidelines are designed to fatten up the cattle for the slaughter.

This poor kid will be fed lots of govt. approved “heart-healthy” grains and taught to fear steak and eggs. At 300 lbs. he will - shock - require even more helpful intervention.

Guess after all these years on FR you still don’t know how to check a profile. And what does a football game have to do with this thread anyway. Sheesh...

I eat because it’s lunchtime. Or dinner time.

Take your thought one step further. Why do we eat 3 times per day? It's all social custom. Has absolutely nothing to do with nutrition.

Along with your "eat when hungry" strategy try only eating when you are standing. The sitting is also social. Sounds weird I know, but for my wife and I, it works. Even though we may make a pot of chili, when we stand and eat, we only eat one serving. Then, we each do our dish and move on to something else.

Where are you seeing 15 years old? I saw this "the Cleveland 8-year-old is considered severely obese" after reading the Yahoo article.

This was from http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/11/obese_cleveland_heights_child.html which said

An 8-year-old Cleveland Heights boy was taken from his family and placed in foster care last month after county case workers said his mother wasn't doing enough to control his weight.

Oops, didn’t notice the “/s” which is where you got the 15 year old figure. Looks like it MUST be time for my annual eye exam.

Your post 58, excellent info. I have warned my loved ones of the dangers of too much fructose.

I visit

www.mercola.com

often and Dr. Mercola speaks on the dangers of fructose, even when its source if fresh fruit.

Appreciate the excellent post.

My morbidly obese child with genetic issues was raised on a vegan diet with no added sugars from birth.

No junk food, no mickyd’s. The nutrition specialists at the Children’s hosptial did not know what to do with her.

We moved to a more meat based diet, still organic and managed to keep her weight in check. The genetic testing showed that she had certain markers for obesity beyond willpower and diet issues.

Thanks,
I was only referring to the general population. There certainly are some special case people with genetic or glandular issues as well that cause or exacerbate these similar problems.
Glad things are working better now for her.

>>People are cramming so many calories in their face in a vain search for nutrition.

I agree with your whole post. But in particular to that sentence; it is interesting that some researchers discovered some animals (locusts for one) will keep eating until they have eaten enough protein for their body’s needs.

When half of them were given locust-chow with one third the protein (but same # of calories) they ate three times as much of that food before they stopped eating, compared to regular locust-chow.

I believe that translates to humans too. Food guidelines say to eat no more than 15% of calories from protein because it will supposedly damage your kidneys, but many medical specialists have debunked that. Those people who eat lots more than 15% find that somewhere between 30% and 40%, hunger goes completely away, and stays away much longer, even after a smaller sized meal.

So you’re right that when the body realizes it is not getting enough of many nutrients it signals to keep eating.
