Family: Illegal-immigrant student martyred himself for Dream Act

An illegal-immigrant student in Texas who committed suicide the day after Thanksgiving left letters saying he felt trapped by his lack of opportunities and, according to his family, he “decided to sacrifice himself for the cause.”

High school senior Joaquin Luna, 18, dressed in a suit, kissed family members, went into the bathroom and shot himself, according to his brother, Diyer Mendoza. In the letters he said he had lost hope in the chances for the Dream Act, which is legislation that would have legalized illegal-immigrant students and young adults but which was blocked in Congress last year.

“He was actually doing this for the cause, mainly the Dream Act,” Mr. Mendoza said. “He was doing this to show politicians, to show that something had to be done because there are a lot of kids out there in the same situation.”

The case highlights the hundreds of thousands of illegal-immigrant students who are caught between a decision their parents made when they were young and the situation with U.S. law.

Immigrant-rights advocates said politicians in Washington should take notice.

“His death is an indictment on the failure of this administration to move an inch forward on fixing a broken immigration system,” said Jorge-Mario Cabrera, communications director for the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, which has planned a Friday commemoration for Luna.

Mexico has many colleges, UNAM, or National Autonomous University of Mexico has about 315,000 students, at a time. Not exactly a small college.

He could have joined the military.

Errr, not the U.S. military without a green card. To join our military one must be a LEGAL resident alien.

Can we have some stories about Americans who committed suicide because they couldn’t support their families because illegals had forced them out of business (ask many landscapers who were making a decent living until illegals drove prices down)? Can we have some stories about Americans who couldn’t pay their medical bills or get medical treatment while illegals seem to get medical services for free?

The scene from Blazing Saddles comes to mind.

In this case, however, the whole nation is held hostage - "or the Mexican gets it!"

....martyred himself for the Dream Act

**************

Liberalism can be fatal...

I am sorry for his family's loss -- but give me a break!

If he wanted to be noble -- how about challenging the status quo in his native land??...
---the corrupt government, crime lords, and economic conditions....

stuff like that...

Life = wasted... sad

If his parents had not broken the law in the first place they would still be in Mexico and still have their son.

Wonder if he would have committed suicide then due to lack of opportunities in Mexico.

Why is this suddenly our problem?.......Newt going to have a campaign stop to see the grieving Grandmother and Grandfather to offer his support for his 10 Point Dream Scheme?

The parents should be charged for endangering a minor. Using their children in an illegal act. But for being brought illegaly accross the border Luna would be alive today.

Uh, sounds to me like the brother and perhaps other family members KNEW he was going to do this.
