Multiple sources familiar with the discussions told POLITICO Friday that Herman Cain is “leaning toward suspending the campaign,” in the words of one, who stressed no decision has been made.
“He’ll probably get out, but nothing’s been decided,” another source said.
The one-time leader in the Republican presidential polls is scheduled to address supporters at the opening of his Georgia state headquarters Saturday. He was set to meet with his wife Friday to discuss the future of his candidacy at the end of a week at which he and aides repeatedly said he was “reassessing” his candidacy.
Cain himself has sounded conflicted about the decision, saying in interviews this week that he was eager to spare his wife and family any further pain. But at events in Michigan, Ohio and South Carolina this week, he’s taken a defiant tone.
The source cited the toll the period that began on Oct. 30 has taken on his family — something Cain has discussed publicly over the last few days.
The two options he’s weighing are “continuing forward with the campaign, or suspending the campaign,” the first source said.
But Cain may still decide to fight, the source added. Either way, Cain has made clear he is not conceding the allegations against him are true, and also that he plans to keep fighting to clear himself somehow, although it’s not clear what form that would take.
What’s also become clear is that some of Cain’s advisers want him to keep going.
Cain’s campaign spokesman J.D. Gordon pushed back on the rumors that the candidate would likely leave the race, saying, “I don’t know where they are getting their information.”
Gordon referred back to Cain’s comments on Fox News on Thursday night that he’d make a decision by Monday and at a town hall on Friday, where he said he’d announce his future plans on Saturday.
“I don’t have anything to add from what Mr. Cain said in Rock Hill, S.C., and on the Sean Hannity program,” Gordon said.
Cain aides were preparing for a campaign through the Iowa caucuses as recently as Thursday night, when the candidate’s Iowa chairman Steve Grubbs says he met with campaign manager Mark Block in Des Moines. Grubbs said they even submitted a campaign mobile app to Apple for approval on Friday.
Cain’s schedule is filled well into next week, with plans to campaign in Oklahoma on Monday and to speak at the Republican Jewish Coalition forum on Wednesday. The national campaign also just launched the Women for Herman Cain group, naming Cain’s wife Gloria, as its head.
“We were planning the campaign for the rest of the month. We have a lot of work to do,” Grubbs said. “We’ve got all sorts of things going on, so I would be real disappointed if he did drop out.”

She seems believable on the videos. (Not credible, but believable.) But there is zero evidence, other than her words. No photos, no receipts, no cards/letters, no nothing to show 13 years of a relationship. It's bizarre. Very bizarre.
Personally, I'm of the “innocent until proven guilty” mindset. Another few days or weeks of withholding judgment isn't going to kill us.

Well, regarding Libya.... Ghadaffi was a brute but he was a brute who supported US anti-terrorism efforts. He has been replaced by the Muslim Brotherhood, just like Ghadaffi warned the west would happen. The Middle East is aflame with Islamists taking over all the countries that had been our allies in the war against terror, just at the time that Iran is getting functional nukes.
What would I say about Libya? I would say Libyans are worse off now than they were before and the world is worse off now than it was before. I would say the fire raging in the Middle East is deadly and it comes as a result of what Obama had told the Egyptian ambassador: that he was and still is a Muslim who supports the Muslim agenda - which I understand to be the destruction of the US and Israel and the establishment of a worldwide caliphate under sharia.
You know what would have happened to Cain if he had said those things, given what the media has been trying to get us to think about Libya?
He had a strategic issue right there. Do you say what’s true but totally politically incorrect, or do you say what people are able to hear for the time being? Do you say what you feel in your gut or do you say what you can document? Do you wait to say the truth until after you can document it, or do you say what you think and then get blasted for making “unsubstantiated accusations”?
A kid at school asked me today whether I think Bin Laden is dead. All I could say was, “They say he is but we haven’t been shown any proof one way or another. He’s probably dead but I really can’t say for sure.”
I’m sure you would call me “Mrs Confused” because of that. Well, I hate to tell you this, but in a world where your government is caught in one lie after another while hiding everything they can possibly hide, being confused is the only reasonable response for somebody with an evidence-based epistemology - which is the epistemology Cain displayed when he was grilled over whether or not a person is born gay. He said the science doesn’t show that.
Well, the evidence on Libya doesn’t really shout out that US actions in Libya were either lawful or helpful. So what’s a person supposed to say about it? What would you say about it?

Chris, there is no conservative Republican who does not exist without a constant barrage of arrows slug at them by liberals. They are racists, slanderers and scapegoaters. That is just the way it is, Chris.
That is what Reagan put up with. Newt put up with it. Perry puts up with it. Michelle Bauchmann...Sarah Palin...anyone who is not a pc socialist like Romney or McCain is absolutely hated. I despise that they do this to good people but they do it every time. Some conservatives rise in spite of it and some are flummoxed and defeated by it. All are hurt by it because it is evil.
Mr. Cain was not born yesterday. I am sure he knew what was going to come at a Black conservative man. It’s still shocking to be the brunt of liberal public ridicule and hate.
You really ought to sit down and actually break out what you believe are conservative values... and then find a candidate that has a record on the specifics.
Just hearing the buzzwords 'conservative values' is meaningless... and if that's your criteria, then you aren't really doing conservativism any favors.
My biggest 'conservative values' are: small government, minimal federal regulations, and strong states' rights.

Mr. Cain needed to say what is true about Libya and talk around the media to the American people. Like you said, if the “arab spring” results in Libya and the other nations ending up in the hands of radical Islam through the Muslim Brotherhood, from the US point of view, Lybia and the Middle East in general, is worse off with the regime change.
Mr. Cain did not know the answer and could therefore, not express the answer. But nice spin. :)
I am much less socially conservative. That's why any affair doesn't matter to me. I'm not married to the guy. If anyone cheats on their wife, that's his burden to bear, and his wife's burden. And it's up to them to decide if their marriage can survive. I care about what I want a President to accomplish. A President can be having 7 whores a week for lunch dates for all I care, as long as he does the job I am hiring him to do.
But for the record, my list of three things wasn't MY list of three things. I was merely point out that everyone who is ready to lynch Cain needs to be careful what they ask for. If they push Cain out, what are they left with, and will they like their remaining choices?
It's a “win the battle vs. win the war” kind of thing. It may be great to sit on a high horse and say “I would never vote for a man who cheated on his wife.” But if that means we are stuck with Obama.... well, I for one would take the guy who cheated on his wife, rather than be stuck with Obama for 4 more years. I want to win the war, not the battle.

At best we got 2 or 3 years left. Disaster with the Euro might give us an additional 1 or 2 years provided we dont try to play savior to the world. If we do then we may not get to 2012.

Which of the candidates has articulated that view on Libya? I’ve missed a lot of what has been said so that is an honest question; I honestly don’t know what views on Libya have been expressed by the candidates.
Cain didn’t know the right view on Israel but when he was educated he got it right - even to the point of attending a rally in Israel to support Israel without any fanfare or anybody even knowing he was there. Ignorance can be corrected pretty easily; I’m not too worried about that, if the heart is right.
Of course it is...you don’t ask your donors and supporters to travel to Atlanta to hear you tell them you are going to stay the course.
