Perhaps the party needs to look at having the delegates at the convention nominate a person who has not been discredited in advance by the current process.

Indeed. Why can't the party change their process...nominate delegates to the convention and free them to vote for anyone they choose. Hide the candidates from the media until the vote. Vote them in just 90 days before the election and shorten the whole process. Pick Sarah at the convention and they will play hell trying to find new dirt on her.
