Breaking: Blago gets 14 year sentence
Hot Air ^ | DECEMBER 6, 2011 | Ed Morrissey

Rod Blagojevich’s sentencing started off with a surprise admission from his legal team that acknowledged the disgraced Illinois governor had engaged in corruption — which was followed by a lengthy apology in which Blagojevich claimed he didn’t realize that he was doing anything wrong. The strategy apparently impressed the judge only enough to reduce the potential sentence from 20 years, but still slammed Blagojevich with a 14-year sentence:

Disgraced former Gov. Rod Blagojevich was sentenced Wednesday to 14 years in prison after making a final plea for leniency, acknowledging his guilt and saying, “I am unbelievably sorry.”

“I believe he did, in fact, accept [responsibility],” U.S. District Judge James Zagel said in announcing how long Blagojevich should spend in prison after being convicted of 18 corruption charges that included attempting to sell or trade an appointment to fill the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by the election of President Barack Obama.

The press has focused on the sale of the Senate seat, but his bigger crime was extorting money out of a Children’s Hospital by forcing them to use a consultant associated with another Obama buddy..Rezko. The lady Director of the hospital blew the whistle on them. The board which wouldn’t approve of the hospital plans was partly appointed by Obama with nominations made by Rezko. They all three should be in prison,,but Obama skates.

“...I still believe that Obama was up to his eyeballs in this....”

I do too. But not to worry. On his way out the door, Ø will pardon Blago and then, in a move never made by an occupant of the Oval Office, Ø will pardon himself. That would be to head off any legal actions that would have come his way once he vacates our House.

Yes, Obama can pardon him. It is my likely that he pardons Retzko, that is the guy who took the fall. Retzko was playing two schemes at once, Obama and Blago ... not the same schemes. Big mistake, Blago thought it was one in the same. Blago thought he was a Rham guy, in the end Rham gave Blago to the wolves

Illinois license plates should be cheap since they’re all made by their former governors.

Not true, he will be a real "celebrity" in the shower stall for the next 14 years.

I am surprised he hasn't flipped on Obamessiah and Dead Fish Emanuel. That said, give him a few good years of shower stall celebrity and he will be ready to sing like a canary.

Unless, of course, Obama gets what he deserves ... Impeachment.

Bump! Very pleasant thought.

“Save the prison space for someone who deserves it and let Blago go home.”

Really? I disagree completely! What Blago did was far more serious than someone committing an ordinary crime. We are not going to stop the rampant crookedness of our political “class” until many of them do serious time for their public corruption. Blago will probably get a presidential pardon as Obama leaves office, so it’s quite likely that Blago won’t see the inside of a jail at all, particularly if his lawyers can keep him out on appeal. I just wish that the judge had taken him into custody at the sentencing today. Screw his family, he ( and his wife) knew what was up. His kids need to know that their father is a criminal.

Thank you for sharing the DU perspective. However, this is a conservative website where we don't feel sorry for criminal socialist Democrats who try to sell U.S. Senate seats to the highest bidder.
