Licensing should not be part of exercising the right to keep and bear arms, the grassroots group Georgia Gun Owners asserts in a press release issued today. Announcing the pre-filing of the Georgia Constitutional Carry Act of 2012 (HB679) by State Representative Jason Spencer, the bill promises to eliminate the requirement to have a Georgia Weapons Carry License to carry firearms openly or concealed, as is currently established lawful practice in Vermont, Alaska, Arizona and Wyoming.
Per Georgia Gun Owners, the legislation will:
* Eliminate the mandatory intrusive government requirement for background checks of law-abiding Georgia gun owners;
* Eliminate the mandatory requirement for taxes or fees be paid to county governments across the state, some of which add up to more than $100;
* Eliminate mandatory government fingerprinting requirements;
* Eliminate mandatory trips to county probate courts in order to carry openly or concealed;
* Eliminate mandatory county government-im posed weapons license waiting periods;
* Leave the current Georgia Weapons Carry License in place as a voluntary license, for the sake of reciprocity; the license will no longer be mandatory to carry open or concealed in Georgia.
Quoting State Rep. Spencer, the release asserts:
Law-abiding citizens should not have to be fingerprinted and cataloged like common criminals just to be able to defend themselves, their family and their property.
In this day and age, with our firearms rights under full-fledged attack from Washington, and even here in the State, it's time to finally remove the government-imposed barriers to private protection and self-defense.

Wow... $100 fee..
Here in California (yes, you can get a License to Carry in California if you live in the right county - see http://calgunsfoundation.org/index.php/resources/ccw-initiative ), the cost of obtaining a license is between $400 and $600.
Initial Application - $20
LiveScan / DOJ / FBI Background Check - $165
16 hr training course - $100 to $300
Ammo for training course - $20 to $50
Final Permit - $80
Total $385 to $615, 2 full days for training and 3 visits to the county Sheriffs office.
At least in most of the Eastern California counties we can get the license. The CalGuns foundation is working on the rest of the counties, but some of them will only be brought into compliance with state law kicking and screaming.
Good luck to all of you in GA getting Constitutional Carry implemented and keep up the good fight.
I would be happy with reciprocity with Virginia.
They had some lady with the opposition group on the radio this morning explaining it was a bad idea because “we need to keep track of who is carrying and where.” I kid you not.
I hope this passes. I have my license but I would like to save the needless $120 or so that it cost us each. Not to mention until recently you had to go downtown and to two different buildings to complete the paperwork. Pain in the ass.
Isn’t Georgia a state where you just walk into a Justice of the Peace, lay down some money and walk out with a permit? That’s sort of already “Constitutional Carry ... just with a small bribe”.

No it costs $65 and you have to go to the police dept and get fingerprinted. Then in about 2 weeks you get the license. You have to renew every 5 years.
All states should eliminate the tax on firearms. Another version of a “poll tax”..
Too bad we couldn’t get Constitutional Carry to even be considered by our allegedly pro-gun governor here in Texas.
