More Americans than ever say they celebrate the upcoming holiday of Christmas as a religious one.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 88% of American Adults say they celebrate Christmas, and 81% of this group celebrate it as a religious holiday. Just 16% of those celebrants regard it as a secular holiday.

If you didn’t know the date of your birth, would you still have a birthday? Now, I put about as much energy into secular Christmas as I do July Fourth. But when I go to church on Christmas Eve to celebrate the birth of Christ, I do it with joy and worship.

Scripture doesn’t tell us to do most of things we do as part of our religion. Scripture even tells us to only “think of Me” when you break bread or drink wine. There is no scriptural basis for a communion liturgy or sacrament. But we do it to feel closer to our God. Take away all the secular parts of Christmas and that’s what you have, and I don’t care what day of the year that occurs.

Obviously that does to you, so please enjoy your version of Christianity that is boiled down the parts demanded by scripture and nothing more. When Obama and the bankers have destroyed America and we can’t afford the expensive trappings of secular Christmas and fancy churches, then you will be able to show us all the way. Stay strong! We’ll need your minimalism one day soon.

Not true. Exodus gives pretty detailed instructions on keeping Passover.

There is no scriptural basis for a communion liturgy or sacrament.

Now that IS true. The church has completely changed the original intent. And that's the problem - God's original holy days have been replaced by man's made up ones.

Why didn’t you answer the question?

Your question is a desperate attempt to justify rejection of something wholesome and attractive and entirely biblical.

Huh? My asking the question "where does scripture sanctify it" is an attempt to justify rejection of something that is "entirely biblical"? That's a bit circular. If it's "entirely biblical" then show me where.

I'm also not following your "pride" thing. I'm prideful because at this point in my Christian walk I have begun to question man made traditions in light of scripture and what may or may not be pleasing to my Father? How is that anything but humble? Isn't it prideful, rather, to insist that we know better than He does?

Plenty of Christians reject Halloween because of its origins. There are similar origins for elements of Christmas and Easter. Why are they ok? I'm not sure they are anymore.

But that's my walk. Enjoy the holiday season.

Easter & Christmas are celebrations of transformational events in salvation history during which we worship God and honor Him by celebrating with great joy at what God has wrought. If you begrudge those of us that do so our even greater jubilation at doing so in solidarity with billions of Christians around the globe, then I can’t help you; closed and stubborn minds are not my forte, but I pray God will provide for even the closed-minded and stubborn who would deny Him these two global celebrations of Gospel events.

Halloween has become a celebration of ghouls and horror.
It used to be the eve of All Saints Day, which was a day to recall the Christian witness of the deceased who led lives of heroic Christian virtue. My experience is that committed Catholics celebrate All Saints Day and our children dress up as saints. Been doing that ever since I had my own kids - and the people I hang with do the same thing. Its rather wonderful. It is great to see my children and their friends dressing up as the godly men and women (that they see as heroes all year long) on this special day (instead of dressing up as Spider Man or Shrek or Barbie)! And to think some kids are denied this special occasion to gather together with other Christians around the nation to celebrate the Christian witness of godly men and women (while others dress up as witches and mummies) - it sucks to be such a kid whose parents deny them such wholesome Christian activity.

Selfishness. That’s what your comments convey. No one else can set a date for such celebrations. How dare anyone!

Well, eff that attitude.

I don’t take the question seriously because no actual Christian would ask why Christians should set aside a date

to join with other Christians,
to worship the Lord and in a special way,
to recall His humble birth, and
to thank Him for entering the world as a helpless tiny man.

I live in New Jersey, and I drive a car. I’m starting to think that’s a problem.

No one lives in New Jersey or drives a car in the BIble.

Passover and Christian Communion have the same roots, but they are certainly not the same thing.
