NATO to stop training Iraq army when U.S. troops leave

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - NATO will end its seven-year troop training mission in Iraq at the end of December, the alliance said on Monday, a move that will coincide with the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the country.
The decision follows U.S. President Barack Obama's announcement in October that U.S. troops would go home at year-end after talks to keep thousands there as trainers fell apart over Washington's condition that U.S. forces should have immunity from prosecution in local courts.
A statement from NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said the decision to end the NATO mission launched in 2004 was taken at a meeting of alliance ambassadors in Brussels.
A NATO official said the talks with Iraq ground to a halt over the same issue of jurisdiction.
"Agreement on the extension of this successful programme did not prove possible, despite robust negotiations conducted over several weeks," Rasmussen's statement said, while adding that NATO remained committed to future cooperation with Iraq.

So we are not suppoed to train them anymore, but the money spigot stays open ....
We'll continue to train them. We'll bring their officers & NCO's here to the US to receive training, as we've done for decades with other "friendly" nations military.
The rags will then return home to use what they've learned to make better trained terrorists.
Didn’t work too well anyway. A curse on those who made our military treasure lsot to the ages.
Let me guess the future....
Within 5 years, with the help of Russian military advisors, the Iraqis will be operating Soviet and Chinese military equipment purchased with borrowed US money, and selling their oil to Russia and China
The ever helpful French and Germans will, of course also ensure their industrial barons get a piece of the pie by selling radars and C3 systems, and helping them develop peaceful nuclear power just like Iran (sarc)
Voila! Back to the 1980’s Iraq of Saddam Hussein!
“Yer on yer own.”
I’m with you and I wish it were true but I think the US govt is hiring some 17,000 “private contractors” to continue to train and work with the Iraqui’s. Thats going to cost some $$$ going forward into probably infinity. It never ends.
Rots of Ruck.
