Payroll tax cut row threatens gov't shutdown (Democrats threaten to stop middle-class tax break)

A Republican payroll tax cut bill that sailed through the House despite a White House veto threat is dead on arrival in the Senate, and it will soon be time for talks on a final package, the Senate's top Democrat says.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., made the remarks Tuesday shortly after the House used a near-party line 234-193 vote to approve the measure. The bill has drawn nearly universal Democratic opposition because it would force work to begin on the 1,700-mile-long Keystone XL oil pipeline, which President Obama would rather postpone, and would trim federal spending without forcing the wealthy to contribute as much as Democrats want.

The measure would keep 160 million workers from seeing their payroll tax jump on Jan. 1 from this year's 4.2 percent back to its normal level of 6.2 percent — a $1,000 difference for a family making $50,000. It would also renew expiring extra benefits for long-term jobless people and head off a cut in doctors' Medicare reimbursements, a reduction that could prompt some to stop seeing elderly patients who use that program.

Reid says he will schedule a vote shortly on the House-passed bill to underscore its irrelevance — a vote that should start the clock ticking on what stands as the year's final, high-stakes partisan faceoff.

This is why it is absolutely necessary that we take the Senate back. Not just the majority, but the Super majority. Plus add more seats to the House

I agree....We need all three to get anything done.

Obama and his peons still doesn't get it that tapping our energy sources produces two fold benefits...the commodity and JOBS!!!

Instead, Republicans would raise the money . . . by cutting funds from Obama's 2010 health care overhaul . . .

Absolutely. They only need to look to North Dakota for that model. They are booming on all fronts, including housing.

I am more cynical than that, I believe they DO get it but YOU don’t get that they do not want to produce two fold benefits, they want the country to grind to a complete halt. I believe we are witnessing conscious evil masked as incompetence.

“Democratic opposition because it would force work to begin on the 1,700-mile-long Keystone XL oil pipeline”

And that’s being portrayed in the media as BAD. Putting people to work...what an evil concept.

this "TAX cut" is a load of crap!!! It is the social security money that is either paid in or the system goes bust!!

The SS system is a load of crap too but it is the sytem that has been created and is in place. GWB tried to change it and NOT ONE REPUBLICAN was willing to support changes. So the workers have to put in their 2% or the system fails...long before it should.

this "TAX cut" is a load of crap!!!

It's actually just redistribution. The payroll tax cut just moves the burden from the SS Tax deduction to the general fund where income tax payers (and our debtors) foot the bill.

Has anyone calculated how much the XL pipeline will reduce the price of our gasoline?

$0.20 per gallon?
$0.50 per gallon?
$1.00 per gallon?

Why is Obama trying to keep the price that Americans pay for gasoline so high?

Is OPEC paying Obama some “baksheesh”?
