Newt left elected office after only 20 years in Congress. That is short by most standards. He was a lightening rod & eased out by his GOP cannibalizing colleagues (who are still there)!!

Even if he had wanted to make a living as a K-Street lobbyist, there was no possibility - he had no leverage.

Could he have returned to academia for income? Doubtful, he had been denied tenure earlier in his career.

What did he do? Wrote educational books and began a consulting company to help people navigate the corridors of power and punishment. He found a need and filled it.

Walker is great, but needs to survive the recall election. He is the left’s worst nightmare and they are doing everything in their power to destroy him now.

That's a pretty good description of Newt.

Newt is definitely NOT!!! my ideal choice. He’s got a lot of baggage and probably still has quirks that make people wonder about what’s rattling around inside his cranium. But I would pick him before I’d pick Romney...granted not too hard a choice concerning Mitt. If he did something illegal, then criticize him for it. If what he did was legal, I can’t carp about him being paid for it. Incidentally, I’d like to cease all ethanol susbsidies tout suite.

Apparently they needed a historian just like Freddie and Fannie. Only a desperate fool would support this crook for president.

I am not crazy for newt either, but what he earned is no problem for me...what has the X president Clinton earned by peddling influence.. I remember back when Bush 1 and Reagan were demonized for earning money after the presidency for giving speeches....democrats/media have no shame.... Hope Newt earns lots, the term EARNS is foreign to the media.

"What are your solutions to this entrenched status quo?"

Gee, I dunno. Maybe get over our collective case of Stockholm Syndrome long enough to at least try electing someone who's not recently been on the payroll of (and beholden to) nearly every major lobby in that entrenched status quo?

Or we could just give up and let them scare-monger us into voting for another one of their boys -- and then hope against hope that they'll suddenly quit screwing us over out of the kindness of their hearts. Do you not see the inherent insanity of this approach?

Indeed. I heard Ann Coulter trashing Gingrich on Hannity’s show today, whining that he was someone who liked to make shocking statements just to get attention... Geez, talk about hypocrisy!

How much Newt earns and who he earns it from is not an issue. This is a free country, he can earn whatever he wants from whomever he wants as long as he doesn't break the law and he pays his taxes. And I found nothing to indicate that Newt has not legitimately earned over the last decade.

That is not what the "lobbying" claims are pointing out.

The lobbying claims I - and many other conservatives - are making have to do with whether he is the best candidate.

Amongst conservatives, for over 200 years in America, lobbyists (or whatever they were called before they were called lobbyists) were seen as "not good" to elect to public office. Something about a "REVOLVING DOOR", where lobbyists go to work for the government, and government employees go to work lobbying the government.

The Tea Party RAILED against such behavior - only a few months ago.

Now that Newt is the front runner, there are actually millions of people who just one month ago were RAILING against the "revolving door" - now, like maroons - are screaming that one of the biggest "revolving door" guys ever, is their special candidate.

Just admit your mistake - your conservative friends are telling you about Newt's lobbying in brotherly love and concern - we will not hold your mistake over you. All of us have been "taken" by one swindle or another in our lives, and we readily admit it.

If we elect a lobbyist - we are very, very stupid. Not that he should not be a lobbyist - IT'S A FREE COUNTRY. But electing a lobbyist President, that's the mother of all stupid moves for America. I mean, come, really. My birthday was yesterday, I wasn't born yesterday.
