Because when it all comes down to it, in the end, girls will always like the princesses and the pink stuff, and boys will like the other super hero sports stuff. It's just the way it has always been. There might be some boys who want the pink stuff, and maybe some girls will want the blue stuff, but in the natural scheme of things those will be small minorities, and the rest of the population will always gravitate towards pink for girls, blue for boys. Went to Disney in the summer, and ALL the little girls where dressed as princesses and all the little boys where dressed as pirates. Come on American daddies, I bet you would be very sad and depressed if your boys wanted to wear pink princess dresses and your daughter wanted a toy M-16 soldier action set. I know I would if that was my little boy wanting to be a ballerina.

Problem
Prior to 1900 pink was a boy color as it was a pale red which was a strong masculine color and blue was a girl color as it was the color of the Virgin Mary.
So the idea that pink is naturally a "girl" color and blue is naturally a "boy" color is not in it's self natural.
Explain.

I have 2 granddaughters, 5 and 3.
One is going to be a princess, the little one is gonna be a biker and a rock climber. She can face-climb El Cabinet in world record time.

I have one sister who flirted with feminism. She gave my six year old son a doll when she came to visit. He thanked her but shot me a look that said she was nuts.
Later, he was building a robot from parts of toys on a remote controlled car base with a trash can body. He took the head off the doll and put it on his robot. I sent my sister a picture. :)

Girls like pink
Jessica Watson, 18 years old, Skipper of Ella Baché, currently approaching the Montague Island Lighthouse on the Rolex Sydney to Hobart yacht race, 51st in a field of 88.
And she's running hard. There's at present a tight group of identical Sydney 38 class boats
- 50th Deloitte doing 6.7kts
- 51st Ella Baché, doing 7.4kts
- 52d Mondo, doing 5.9kts
Deloitte's skipper is Chris Lewis. who has been her sailing coach. Can Grasshopper snatch the pebble from Master's hand? Don't think she isn't considering it.
(And no, her crew didn't get a vote on boat colour)

When my daughter was little I gave her both types of toys and let her decide. She chose the girlie stuff herself. She has always been a capable woman as an adult - cutting and laying her own tile and building things. When she was in high school, she played 3/4 of a basketball game, then showered and dressed for half time to be chosen and crowned as homecoming queen.
Her toddler daughter (4) is all princess. She spends most of her time dressed as one and has an obsession with crowns and shoes. But she is very much a tom boy once you get her outside.
It is a shame there are not more dress up things for boys. They like to twirl when they dance at age three just as much as the girls.

When my second daughter was three, she preferred the ballerina and double holster cap gun look. Yes, she wanted to be a ballerina/princess, but a well-armed one.
We encouraged her well-developed worldview.

In today's world, it might be more appropriate if girls were given this for a 'toy'.
