Portland’s Biggest LGBT Paper Folds
Mediabistro ^ | 12/26/11 | Rachel Kaufman

‘Just Out,’ the 28-year-old newsmagazine serving Portland’s LGBTQ community, is done for, according to a short announcement posted on the site.

“Effective December 26, 2011, Just Out newsmagazine, serving Portland’s LGBTQ community since 1983, is no longer in business. Three years of recession have taken their toll. Please direct all inquiries to Marty Davis at marty@justout.com. Thank you for your many years of readership and support,” the statement read in its entirety.

The paper had seven staffers on its masthead.

According to the Washington Blade, “the demise of the most notable LGBT newspaper in the region is a significant development for a city that has generated several major LGBT news stories over the past several years.” You’d think if a LGBT paper could make it anywhere, it’d be in the second-largest city to have an openly gay mayor (Houston is #1).

Too bad, so sad. No more queer newspaper for Portland, whatever will they do? I suggest a good old hand wringing.

Now if only the biggest LGBT papers in New York and Washington would fold (The NY Times and Washington Post, respectively).

I’ve seen “gay” newspapers in other big cities, and if the Portland one is anything like those, they were probably the largest single cause of the spreading of homosexual disease and addiction in the Northwest.

I'm GLAAD about this.

Oh.

Wait.

I meant I'm glad.

Yeah. Glad.

Whew...!

That’d be like a Krispy Kreme going out of business in Little Rock or Jackson.

Indeed. I think you can get esophageal gonorrhea just from coming within 10 feet of the newspaper box.

I’m guessing the ‘q’ stands for queer.

It stands for “questioning”. Like they aren’t sure what the hell they are. Shorthand for trying out the smorgasbord.
