Perry's Latest Target: Santorum
U.S. News ^ | 12-29-2011 | Alex M. Parker

Texas Gov. Rick Perry is taking aim at Rick Santorum in a tongue-in-cheek new radio ad which blasts the former Pennsylvania senator for supporting earmarks during his years in Congress. The spot highlights how Santorum—a nonfactor in the race as recently as a few weeks ago—has become a fat target for fellow candidates.

[See the latest political cartoons.]

The ad accuses Santorum of trying to get more than $1 billion in earmarks over his years in Congress, and for voting for the so-called "Bridge to Nowhere," the 2005 proposed bridge in Alaska which became a symbol of wasteful government projects. To support the ad the Perry's campaign points to a white paper from the conservative group The Club for Growth which gave Santorum high marks in most areas, but claimed he had a "mixed record" on spending.

The radio ad continues a theme which Perry has stuck to as he makes his final push for Iowa. In another TV ad, Perry blasted four of his opponents—Santorum, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, and Texas Rep. Ron Paul—for being part of the problem in Washington....

Rick is our crazy aunt.

Come home Rick.

I am tired of spending Texas money to protect you.

The house that we are renting for 10K a month is here.

You are making us all look stupid.

The latest developments in the campaign to help Mitt Romney win next Tuesday in Iowa.

Candidates are inflated, then deflated by instant puffing up followed by instant attacks.

Santorum was the darling of the RINO’s here in PA despite his Pro-Life views.

They used him to support their type of Pro-Abortion candidates from Specter on down.

Rick is a man of faith and pro-life, but in politics he was a tool of the business as usual crowd.

Santorum’s choice for president in Iowa in 1996 was Arlen Specter.

Perry came in back in August when Bachmann was on top, he took her out, then rose in the polls himself.

After that he started making mistakes and his poll numbers went down.

Cain came up and was knocked down.

Gingrich came up and was knocked down.

Now Santorum comes up and Perry is on the attack.

Why is Perry in this race to being with?????????

He helps Romney whether his attacks and mistakes are deliberate or not.

I am a Santorum supporter.

I don’t like “negative” ads.

However, voting records are fair game.

If this is the worst he’s got on Santorum, I’ll stick with him. Perry is my #2, Bachmann #3 and Gingrich #4. I would need a 128-bit processor to come up with Romney’s number.

Perry is not in my top three, he is a distant #4. The only thing he has to say, as far as I’m concerned, is “I’m not as bad as those other guys”.

Attacking Santorum isn’t going to get him anywhere. I’ll give him the same advice I would give any of the others. Obama is your target. Prove to me you’re the one who has cross-hairs on the target; prove to me you’re the one who can bring him down; prove to me you’re the one who really understands what we have to do to save America. I don’t give a rip about earmarks.

He does well when he focuses on O and saving America. He does well when he talks about governing. He loses every time he wastes time attacking Repubs, especially Repubs more conservative than himself. And he suffers for his inability to really articulate principle. He may feel it in his bones, but he can’t articulate it. So he attacks his fellow Repubs instead.

He's made attacks on Romney, too. They just don't get the same amount of attention. Perry sees those votes for Santorum, Bachmann and Cain, and figures they are the ripest to go with him if they turn. I understand it, though I don't like it.

I really dislike Santorum, I have no idea why. Just something about him and his smile in particular makes me want to slap him.

Plus we REALLY need some of the extra conservatives like Santorum and Bachmann to drop out so the conservative vote isn’t split so many ways. Otherwise we are going to end up with Romney.

I was really hoping Santorum and Bachmann would both be out after Iowa.. now with this latest little media blitz Santorum will probably stay in longer than I had hoped. But maybe after he gets 1% in New Hampshire he’ll drop out then.

Why is Perry in the race?

Ego?

I don’t know any other reason.

A bunch of Aggies who have deep pockets like the idea.

There is not such a thing as an ex Aggie. I admire that.

He’s in the race because his wife, Nurse Ratched, wants him to be president.

There's plenty of Aggies that have no use for Perry either. TAMU isn't as monolithic and cult like as it's made out to be any more than Texans are.

The rest of the nation should be very wary of Perry. As a self proclaimed conservative, he's a proven fraud many times over.

I still cannot believe people actually think Rick Perry is a “conservative”

Calling out Santorum for earmarks is probably something that a guy who was going to spend $150 billion to build toll roads in Mexico and Texas, for the Communist Chinese...as Perry tried to do

That’s like whining about someone having flatulence after you burned down the outhouse

LOL. Is this all they've got? If that's the best they can do to take the luster off of Santorum, I'm feeling better about Rick every day. All of the candidates have flaws. Some have fatal flaws (Romney, Paul, Perry).

Santorum is looking mighty good by comparison.

Well, I think they’re just getting started.

Already the net is a-buzz about Santorum’s “A” rating from the Ethanol subsidy crowd for supporting Ethanol subsidies, his long record of expensive earmarks, and his support of amnesty for some illegal immigrants.

It’ll be interesting to see if supporting Ethanol subsidies and amnesty are really the “deal breakers” so many people professed it to be at FR when Gingrich and/or Perry rose to the top. Methinks folks will suddenly not find them quite the “deal-breakers” they were a few days ago.........

Maybe if somebody had not gutted the governor's mansion via fire, he wouldn't have to reside in the rented house.

You offer an explanation, but I wonder if all this is a leadup to Perry as a VP candidate for Romney.

Romney smiles while Perry is the “attack dog.”

Rick Perry likes in-state tuition for illegals.

Rick Santorum doesn't like in-state tuition for illegals but he still thinks illegals should be allowed to go to college here.

Both positions are a form of amnesty.

>> Plus we REALLY need some of the extra conservatives to drop out so the conservative vote isn’t split so many ways <<

I warned you guys about this months ago when Texas freepers were drooling over the thought of Governor Goodhair jumping into the race when we already had a well established field. It fell on deaf ears and all of Perry's fans insisted he is THE "anti-Romney" candidate and it would be a "two way race" between him and Romney once he got in. Now he's been stuck in 5th place for months and is just splitting up the anti-Romney vote more and going nowhere. Say good night, La Raza Rick. Thanks for playing.
