Santorum surges from behind in Iowa
Philly.com ^ | 12.28.11 | Will Bunch

This reminds me of that scene in the movie "The Perfect Storm," when the terrified meteorologist looks at the radar in panic and says, "It's happening!"

At the start of the month, Rick Santorum needed the following things to happen in order for him to be competitive in Iowa: Newt Gingrich needed to fade. Evangelicals needed to move toward his campaign. Then voters needed to see some tangible sign of momentum, in order to speed up the tortoise-like pace of his Iowa campaign.

Santorum has been my number two, but he is moving up in the polls and respect.

This nasty little article is full of cheap shots like: his 59 percent rejection by Pennsylvania voters in 2006 was the highest I've ever seen for an incumbent senator not facing corruption charges.

C'mon. He was being thumped for backing Pennsylvania's OTHER Senator, Snarlin' Arlen Spector at the behest of George W. Bush and the RNC. IOW, he was repudiated by the voters for his loyalty. And it was 2008 when no Republican was elected nationwide during the Obama landslide.

How many fraudulent votes were cast in Philadelphia, do you suppose? Was this the election when more votes were cast than registered voters?

I think h has such a charisma deficit that I worry about him without a dynamic #2. I think they will beat his horrible loss in his home state, too. That was tough.

Mitt takes Obamacare off the table, plus...he’s Mitt. I keep coming back to Newt, warts and all. I also think a dynamic #2 would help him. Newt/Santorum is kind of intriguing for the help both need in both races.

Every time I look at Santorum I think “He’s a kid.”

I can’t support a guy for president if he still looks like he isn’t allowed at the Grown-Up’s table on holidays. He’s the most mature kid at the card table, though.

Shallow, sure. But I am repulsed by girly-men, metrosexuals and child-men equally. I can’t take him seriously.

I like Rick and hope he does catch on. I have always thought that one of his biggest problems is that he looks like a teenager. Rick, if you are out there, grow some stubble and keep wearing that pheasant hunting cap from time to time. That will offset that all too youthful look you have. Remember how Clinton grayed his hair from time to time? It works!

now i'm really getting confused about the right candidate.

I ruled out Perry from the beginning and Paul still seems too isolationist for me -- he's got a lot of things right, but a lot wrong. Bachman is out for me -- she was my initial choice, but she now seems like a whiner who can't control her mouth, and doesn't talk of what she wants to do but rather claws those who DO talk of what they want to do

Perry I like a lot of what he's accomplished but still fear that he will be torn to shreds in a debate -- plus I read that Perry has sponsored ads that Santorum did some pork barrelling -- I despise candidates who have to resort to mud-slinging.

Cain, sadly, is out or he would have been my choice.

Gingrich is my choice now -- despite his baggage -- but I had ruled out Santorum as a person who couldn't win as his numbers were too low. Now I start to rethink...

To what does one attribute this surge?

has he said something to fire folks up in the last 48 hours?

No, this is a headfake from the MSM

Don’t kid yourself. Rick gave a speech near Scranton a few months ago, and he was as dynamic and moving as any politician I’ve ever heard. There is a lot more to this guy than people think. No one will ever outwork him. He’s smart, ethical and tough as nails. And he WILL hammer the Fiend relentlessly as the nominee. Bob
BTW, he lost in ‘06, and his campaign managers were aloof and incompetent. I believe that he learned what not to do in a political fight.

Rick Perry doesn’t think it’s a head fake, obviously.

I’m not excited about any of them but I will definitely NOT be voting for Rick Perry. His pandering on the illegal immigration issue and his total cluelessness in the debates sealed his fate in my mind.

Having to choose, I’ll take Rick Santorum.

We’ll see how that works out.

Perry hit him square on the jaw as soon as he saw movement.

Good luck with that.

Santorum doesn’t exactly have to defend a border state.

He has the luxury of no record on the matter.

“This nasty little article is full of cheap shots...”

This is nothing, if he shows any sign of being near the top the media, the dems and his opponents will do to him what they did to Bachman, Cain, Perry, Newt, and Paul.

Santorum is the only one (other than Huntsman) who hasn’t undergone a full body cavity search. Sounds like they’re starting though.

How did Bachmann react to this Santorum surge?

How did Newt react?
Paul Pot?

Bachmann had a little inner circle melt down. Brilliant!

“Perry hit him square on the jaw as soon as he saw movement.”

Obviously, Perry would be concerned with any movement with Santorum and coming in behind Santorum in Iowa would embarrass Perry.

However, there is a solid chance that Santorum will come in second or third place with ease and will be well positioned for the remaining primaries. Perry on the other hand will be stumbling out of Iowa if he if he does not take third.

Really? You would base your vote on what someone looks like?
