Remember, millions of Americans would pay money to see the political equivalent of the Ali-Frazier fight in a debate between Newt Gingrich and Barack Obama. In contrast, a debate between Santorum and Obama or between Romney and Obama would attract far less attention.Good point! Debates are not necessarily a good indicator. Reagan lost his first presidential debate.
As for going up against Obama, a slick-talking used-car salesman, with a bit of preparation, could out-debate Obama.
Obama is a great speechifier, because he can read a teleprompter. Without the teleprompter, Obama is on equal ground with mortals, and he doesn’t hold up very well.
Illinois Republicans have already tested the "run the best debater against Obama and we'll win" theory:
