Sometimes, as we work on our various projects, we stumble across data that's kind of interesting in and of itself.
To that end, today's example of that would appear to provide more evidence that social factors have more to do with the perceived rise in income inequality in the United States over time than do economic factors.
In the chart below, we've presented the median adjusted gross incomes we've estimated for 2009's income tax filers according to their tax filing status. The number in parentheses below each column in the chart indicates the number of tax returns filed in 2009 for each group.
It would seem that just marital status has a lot to do with the observed differences between the various kinds of income tax filers.

umm... I know they are stupid but are they SO dumb they dont even understand that this is the combined income for 2 people?

Kinda tells you why we are headed off the cliff right there. Our world is being fashioned by people who are embarrassed that two numbers add up to more than just one of the numbers.
I recall trying to find information on the distribution of income by individuals in the United States several times over the last few years. It is very difficult to come up with. Finding distribution for households, however, is easy.
This article explains why. If you look at the income distribution by individual, the idea that the rich are getting richer and the poor, poorer, in the U.S. simply goes away.
I’d like to see a study of household income comparing couples “sharing a residence” vs married couples.
I’m betting the latter is STILL higher.
If OWS had its way, the Stalinist/Khmer Rouge model would be in operation everywhere.
Those with bourgois tendencies would be sent to the
re-education camps where OWS members would be the judges and inquisitors; the ones with absolute power and authority to carry out corrective rehabilitation, on a moment’s notice, with no due process. (Just like the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia.)

Married couples like mine bring that number down some. We are a one income family. In 2009 I was below the average income in that category, not by much but we did bring down the average. Now we now are above that average a bit, but still a one income household. Would be interesting to see of the married filling jointly, how many are one income families.

Our household income is down about 50% from when we both worked around 7 yrs ago, but we’d not have it any other way.
One of the recent ideas the liberal fascist conglomerate has fed to OWS is an attack on the married filing jointly status.
