PACIFIC BEACH A Navy man accidentally killed himself Thursday morning with a gunshot to his head in Pacific Beach, San Diego police said.
The name of the victim, age 22, was not released. Police initially said the victim had recently graduated from SEAL training, but later said that information had not been verified.
Someone at a residence on Grand Avenue near Lamont Street called 911 about 2 a.m. to report that a man had been playing with a gun and shot himself in the head by accident, police Officer Frank Cali said.
Cali said the victim had gone to a bar, met a woman and brought her back to his residence, where his roommate was sleeping. Cali said the man and woman had been drinking.
The man got out several guns to show the woman, but she asked him to put them away, Cali said. The man insisted that it was safe and put a pistol that he believed was unloaded to his head. He pulled the trigger and fired a round into his head.
Paramedics took the victim to Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla, where he died about 3 a.m.

#3 is actually kinda funny

Perhaps #3 should be first.
And this was a SEAL?
Sad. Very sad.
There is a reason they give marines the guns on a boat.
Yep, because if you succeed in this way to impress her, she isn't a woman you want to hang around anyways.
If you got a woman back at your place, shouldn’t you be playing with her and not your weapons?
Perhaps they stopped teaching the difference between your gun and your weapon in basic.
I think this is sad. The guy probably knew his way around a firearm and it goes to show you that such people can still cause accidents when a gun isn’t treated as a deadly weapon. Stupid accident, but he was still a veteran and deserves respect

His last words were....
“Naw baby (hic)... The only thing that’s loaded roun here ish me!”
Ouch!! I bet he doesn’t do that again.

I've met...and served with...plenty that did not deserve respect. Blew his idiot head off. Could as easily have been someone else's head.
I agree with you. Amazing how many perfect people we have on here who have absolutely done nothing absolutely stupid.
I have trouble believing that somebody tough and smart enough to get through BUD/S training would do something that idiotic. But, booze and boobs make men do strange things...

1.All guns are always loaded.
2.Never let the muzzle cross anything you are not willing to destroy.
3.Keep your finger off the trigger until you are on target and ready to fire.
4.Be sure of your target and beyond.
When he said it was safe because the gun wasn't loaded, he violated rule #1.
When he pointed it at his head, he violated rule #2 (assuming he didn't intend to destroy his brain to impress his date).
When he put his finger on the trigger with the intention of dry-firing the gun, he broke rule #3.
Now, the question is if he broke rule #4. This isn't as clear-cut. He was probably sure that his target was his own brain, but the article makes no mention of whether he checked behind and/or beside his brain to make sure his backstop was clear.
This is my rifle! This is my gun! This is for fighting! This is for fun!

First, the F-18 pilots' murder/suicide on Coronado a few days ago and now this tragic incident. Very sad.
I totally agree with the lessons learned that you posted.
