KEENE, N.H. (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum called Friday for immediate cuts to Social Security benefits, risking the wrath of older voters and countless others who balk at changes to the entitlement program.
"We can't wait 10 years," even though "everybody wants to," Santorum told a crowd while campaigning in New Hampshire and looking to set himself apart from his Republican rivals four days before the New Hampshire primary.
Most of his opponents have advocated phasing in a reduction and say immediate cuts would be too big a shock to current and soon-to-be retirees.

Great post! Add to that that seniors have to pay TAXES on their SS “benefits.”

That kind of statement is absolute B/S.
A good many seniors are already living on the edge. Many can’t return to any workforce. Most are on fixed incomes. They haven’t received any COLA for a few years now. This price of everything has gone up, food, meds, just seeing a doctor.
Hell, why don’t we just kill the old bastards and be done with it.

This won’t make me popular but I read somewhere that more Gen Xers believe in UFOs than they will get SS. I am one of them. The system is completely broke and the best way is to give people an opt out option, don’t pay in, don’t collect no matter what.
SS does need to be cut, but this wasn’t a wise move on Santorum’s part. Too many people believe they deserve it, because they were FORCED into paying into it. They were scammed. It isn’t sustainable in the least. Nevertheless, it is a sacred cow for both sides.

Social Security is NOT a gift from government. People were FORCED to pay into it. That money belongs to THEM.
In Washington speak if the rate increase is reduced, that is called a cut. If the rate is held the same, that is a deep cut. Yawn.

First and foremost, the government has no business doing social security. It is socialism at it’s worst.
There is no more contentious argument to have on FR, but it is an argument we must have as a nation.
To all those who say death to any politician that touches it I say:
First and foremost, get the welfare crowd off of SSI. Drunks, crackheads, the lame disabled, etc etc. Stop sending checks to kids because babies daddy got gunned down in the hood. Babies daddy never paid into SSI and you can’t replace financial support that never existed in the first place.
Disability should not exist from age 20 until death. It does for some. Having a hyper kid or a child that can’t behave is not fixed by a few hundred to a thousand bucks a month. Sorry, learn to parent.
Every illegal alien should be removed from SSI immediately. It’s sad that I even have to write that.
Raise the retirement age and phase this nightmare out of existence with individual choice/freedom in line with our constitution.
After you get rid of all the deadweight, the people who paid in the most should feel the least pain. However, I get tired of reading and hearing supposed conservatives who act like card carrying AARP members whenever anyone mentions SSI.

My kids did not set up the program, they did not vote for these jackass politicans in D.C. that stole from it, and it’s OUR RESPONSIBILITY to fix it. My kids can’t even vote against these morons who are bankrupting our entire nation. They did not vote for the state or local governments that are hopelessly broke either. We did. Doom on us. All of you who get angry at me for writing the truth instead of being angry at yourselves, your neighbors, friends, family, and parents for electing out-of-control government are welcome to fire away. Have you forgotten that 15% is for both Medicare and Social Security? Medicare is 2.9% contribution. What is the cost of Medicare over a person’s lifetime? Your numbers don’t include the real cost of healthcare plus social security vs. what’s paid in.
Let's cut the confiscatory SS taxes and allow/guide workers and their employers to invest in stock market indices. I wish my SS contributions had been invested so! I'd be on the French Riviera now.

Yes Social Security is a ponzi scheme and should be abolished.
However, anyone for the last 50 years who believed they could depend on Social Secuirty is a damn fool.
On that we agree. Pay out the current obligations, abolish the SS taxation ASAP.
Many seniors depend on it. I know a woman in her 70's that is nearly blind now. She worked her whole life and get $900 a month. A local "neighbor" fund run by the newspaper bought fuel oil for her or she'd have no heat. And Santorum thinks she needs to "share the pain"? She's barely eating as her taxes went up on her house. She doesn't have anything left to sacrifice.
