Santorum: Trim Social Security now even if painful

KEENE, N.H. (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum called Friday for immediate cuts to Social Security benefits, risking the wrath of older voters and countless others who balk at changes to the entitlement program.

"We can't wait 10 years," even though "everybody wants to," Santorum told a crowd while campaigning in New Hampshire and looking to set himself apart from his Republican rivals four days before the New Hampshire primary.

Most of his opponents have advocated phasing in a reduction and say immediate cuts would be too big a shock to current and soon-to-be retirees.

Your kids have no claims on it.

Are you for real?

My kids have no claim on what - oppressive taxation on their future earnings? Have you noticed that “we” are 16 Trillion in debt? Contrary to popular belief and some of what I am reading on here the SSI Trust Fund does not exists in a vacuum or lockbox. It’s a guarantee by the same government that is 16 Trillion dollars in debt that grows more each passing day. It all comes from the same government and same printing press.

There is no trust fund! There is nothing... it’s a ponzi scheme that is administered by fools. Don’t worry though, I expect our politicians to completely destroy our currency and economy to honor their promises to cut those checks to you.

Well, that’s not enough. Do you know how much peanut butter costs now? And I have a 103 pound dog who likes food.

I want ten percent of your money and I want it now.

Perry also said the pensions 65 or near 65 year olds would not be affected in his plan.

The BEST thing he said was all countries now receiving foreign aid would start again at Zero in his administration.
THAT’S what we need to cut.
Look at the BILLIONS Omuslim has poured down Islamic sh*tholes.

You work, pay into it, yes you should be able to benefit from it. I have never looked at SS as an entitlement as long as one works and pays into it.

This is a very ill-thought out stance by Rick Santorum, but if that’s what he believes, I’m glad he told us before we voted for him.

I had high hopes for Santorum, but in this case I'm afraid he wanted to show that he can make the tough and painful decisions, instead showed that he can make the easy and dumb decisions.

As has already been said, and as has been the subject of previous threads, Medicaid and Medicare are greater future liabilities than SS.

And what sort of painful cuts does Rick plan for those, or for Section 8 housing, or food stamps and welfare? Guess he hasn't thought that far.

You get 6.4% of my money every month.

Somebody gets 13.3% of your and your employer's money every month. Normally it's 15.3%. How much of that is wasted, passed on in SS payments, passed on in Medicare, pays x amount of Federal workers,.....who knows. But, it is a pay as you go program as far as I know....no lockbox.

And by the way, that’s kind of an insult, but I guess you don’t care.

When there are 3.3 workers per retiree, it’s an entitlement....if it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it’s a duck.

The Social Security “Lockbox” is a figment of the imagination, like Santa Claus and The Easter Bunny.

This is psychotic talk. It is tax and goes into the general fund, you aren't "paying into anything" except the socialist maw.

Actually, you are correct on so many levels. That I can’t argue. Venting due to govt BS and putting their greedy hands into this till.
Still makes me mad that SS was used for other besides what it was meant for.

Have you noticed that “we” are 16 Trillion in debt?

And the $2.6 trillion or so owed to SS is included in the $16 trillion total debt.

Remember the old Fram Oil Filter commercial, “You Can Pay Me Now, or You Can Pay Me Later.”

What people don’t realize is that eventually there will be no choice, SS will have to be cut, and it will be even more painful, than if we start taking some prudent steps now.

But if people are too stupid to realize that, well then, as they say, we get the government we deserve.

“There is no trust fund! There is nothing... it’s a ponzi scheme that is administered by fools. Don’t worry though, I expect our politicians to completely destroy our currency and economy to honor their promises to cut those checks to you.”

There is another answer to this... The federal government (the ones who stole the cash) owns hundreds of trillions in real estate assets. Liquidate part of it to pay the people what they owe them.

This thread has been really interesting.

I’ve learned something about some of my fellow freepers and I’m not totally happy about knowing it.

I know part of the attitude was because the people were dead set on Santorum and were attacking social security recipients to defend him.

but, sheesh
