Obama to businesses: Bring jobs home

ReutersBy Caren Bohan and Jeff Mason | Reuters – 33 mins ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama kicked off an effort to encourage businesses to keep jobs at home instead of outsourcing them overseas, as he rolled out a new election-year theme on Saturday aimed at courting middle-class voters.

In his weekly radio and video address, Obama previewed an event he will hold next week with business executives to highlight the advantages of investing in the United States.

"We'll hear from business leaders who are bringing jobs back home and see how we can help other businesses follow their lead," Obama said.

The White House forum on "Insourcing American Jobs" will be held on Wednesday. Executives from more than a dozen companies will attend, including padlock maker Master Lock, furniture company Lincolnton Furniture, software application developer GalaxE Solutions, and chemicals company DuPont.

The emphasis on keeping U.S. jobs at home is in line with a populist economic message championed by Obama that could play well with union workers, whose support the Democratic president will need to win re-election in November.

The White House sees an increasing trend of companies deciding to "insource" jobs and invest in U.S.-based plants and factories, according to a White House official. It wants to encourage more businesses to follow that trend, the official said.

Well gee RC... if we had a party that would actually stand up against this kenyan usurper, then we could destroy his lies easily. We can show how his personal car company GM has announced major outsourcing to china... and there are about 400,000 more examples... like a certain cabinet member sending an entire division over to china while playing at being pro American business. You are naive if you think this crap will stand in the General election... unless romney is nominated... then obamao wins in a landslide... to many of us cannot and will not vote for that evil pos.

It doesn't seem to have been an issue among the viable Repubican candidates thus far. Change tax policy to favor retaining domestic employment, that's an easy one. There is a growing contingent that sees nothing wrong with tarriffs to disadvantage imports. That's dangerous ground, historically, even though that's what funded the federal government entirely right up to the twentieth century.

Casting blame doesn't solve anything and is easily countered. Offer solutions, conservative ones, or get badly beaten up on this particular issue. There is deepseated anger, as I mentioned, and allowing Democrats to capitalize upon it when they're more the cause will be a mistake.

You say it won't stand in the general election unless Romney is the nominee. I say, as it stands, it'll be avoided by all but Ron Paul, and having a libertarian streak a mile wide, I'm not entirely certain that he'll have anything to say that resonates with and capitalizes upon the populist anger.

BS or not, they're capitalizing. It's naive to think it won't be a powerful means of persuasion for many. It keeps modern day Reagan Democrats on the plantation, for one thing.

software application developer GalaxE Solutions

This company is an H1B body shop that imports their half-price employees from India. They opened an office in Detroit to game the system, not to hire unemployed Detroit natives for software jobs.

Look at the labor costs to produce a product and all the “red tape” manufacturers have to put up with. Would ANY business person NOT see the reasons job are off-shore?

Really, how much as a percent of the MSRP do yo think labor accounts for when purchasing a manufactured good?

We have no VAT so it is a push, at least with Europe.

Folks often use the phrase, “Vote with their feet,” when describing the many wonderful aspects of these United States and the desire of people everywhere to come here to share our freedom. One should wonder why the phrase isn't applied as well to the outsourcing of jobs to other countries. Obviously the American businessman is “voting with his feet,” in at least a similar fashion. Has been going on for years and can be directly tied to regulations and other government interference in the free market (as pointed out by other comments). Funny how people find it difficult to understand this.

Motorola (Illinois) is laying off 800 workers (up to 4000 or more in the past two years) by Feb. 1, including a friend of mine, a financial accountant. His department is being moved to Poland ( ! ) where Motorola will hire and train 400 employees for R & D in either Krakow or Warsaw.

On a more bizarre anecdotal note, my moonlighting computer nerd was laid off his former job after actually being forced to train electronically his own replacement in EGYPT.

What's up is down, what's down is up.

We will become a harmless agrarian society, again. I think that is the goal. THe trick is to buy a couple of 100 acres and learn how to farm as a hobby. We are all Amish now. The Amish are the John Galt’s of our era.

Obama has to get rid of Federal parasites like the EPA and OSHA if he wants more businesses to stay in America and come home to America. Hundreds of thousands of Federal parasites earn a paycheck by harassing and over regulating business. Of course the last thing Obama will do is fire surplus Federal workers, most of whom are AA hires (women blacks gays) at least in the DC area.

Effin EPA right now is trying to slam coal fired power plants and diesel truckers with new nonsensical regulations that cost billions. They are impeding domestic oil/gas drilling and production. Obama is stopping the Excel pipeline. Pathetic communist loser that he is. Lower energy costs would keep businesses in America. Right now the Feds tilt anti business unless you are an Obama crony or a phony “green” business

The national average IQ is 83 in Egypt, 81 in India. There's a reason they charge half price.

Listening to you makes me think that no matter what happens... this republic is doomed. I despise free trade... because it isn't free trade. I embrace fair trade... no tariffs on my goods to you... no tariffs on your goods to me. But America's trade agreements are like our foreign aid... it is all one way.

You know what pisses off Americans? Cheap chicom goods from a nation that stands against everything we are. Corrupt politicians... ALL of them are corrupt... stealing money from our future and lying to us about everything... and a media that is a communist propaganda machine. The majority of Americans are livid over these things and much more... and the pain has increased exponentially with dims in power and America knows it. If we only had a real opposition party and conservative candidates that would call out these criminals for who and what they are. The leadership of the republican party is silent because they are complicit in the treason that we are living through! America is pissed... you misread why. You are close... but it is much deeper and the dims do not have a monopoly on that anger.
