Family of dead robbery suspect speaks(VA)

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - The family of a robbery suspect, shot and killed in the act, is speaking out.

Police say Raymond Davis, 22, of Norfolk, and two other men tried to rob Rogers Sport's Pub in Chesapeake Friday Night.

Witnesses told WAVY.com one of the patrons in the bar shot and killed Davis during the attempted robbery. It's the same story detectives told his grandmother Sheila Davis.

"The man went outside and came back in with his gun and shot him down," said Davis. "It's like shooting a dog down. He is a human being."

Davis says her grandson got mixed up with the wrong crowd. While she doesn't condone his behavior, she wants the public to respect her family in this time of grief.

"I'm not trying to sweet-coat nothing," said Davis. "He went in there to rob the place, but eventually he got killed is the result of it."

Witnesses say Davis and two other men entered the bar armed, wearing masks, and demanding money.

Shelia Davis is asking police to investigate the circumstances of the shooting and what happened after her grandson fell to the floor.

"They beat him with pool sticks," said Davis. "Why would you beat a person with pool sticks when he's already laying on the floor dead?"

Davis says her grandson was in the process of turning his life around. She says he had a steady job at a nearby McDonald's, and was the father to a 2-year-old with another baby on the way.

"They sit there and talk about it like it's a joke or something," said Davis. "It's not a joke. My grandson is gone. He's never coming back."

Police won't say if the person who shot Davis could possibly face charges.

They are still looking for the two other suspects who fled, possibly in a light blue Ford Taurus.

ok, maybe you all are completely without mercy here. And maybe the kid was completely BAD through and through. And definitely he shouldn’t have been robbing anybody.

BUT there are no jobs, each criminal can be presumed to have relatives whose hearts are breaking because of the things he did and what ended up happening with him This grandma can remember buying the kid a Happy Meal and him being little and cute.

My heart breaks for the stuff my kids go through, I would rather it be me than them. So yeah, I am PO’d about the bad breaks my kids got. She is probably PO’d about the bad breaks this kid got.

The robbee had the right to shoot him. And this is a rotten world. Doesn’t change the fact that her heart is broken for the kid.

Men leave women even when the women want to stay with the men.. How do you propose to solve that?

I feel bad for the grand mother who was doing her best having to raise her daughter's bastards."

I feel badly for her because the man is dead, but "her best" didn't work for the daughter, and it wasn't about to work for her grandson either. She thinks he is turning his life around and he is out robbing.

“Davis says her grandson got mixed up with the wrong crowd.”

Fun moment when a judge of my acquaintance completely lost patience with this beaten to death cliche, and snarled:

“Your son wasn’t WITH the wrong crowd, he WAS the wrong crowd!”

I go along with your post except for the “BUT there are no jobs”. That is NO EXCUSE for armed robbery.

And my kids got some bad breaks along the way, but I am not PO’d about that. Life has some bad breaks in it. It is the real world. The “bad breaks” helped them to mature into better people.

It seems most people in this situation are detached from reality. Family just can’t seem to grasp that one of their own can be rotten. In my family, we got bashed by our mothers and fathers well before we go a chance to explain ourselves.

Kept me on the straight and narrow for sure!

well, I continue to give my kids a little money when they have none so they don’t get desperate and do something illegal. This kid probably didn’t have anyone helping him, was getting screamed at by his baby momma for money for formula and diapers or else the child support system had him in their sights and he had no prospects.

True, the no jobs situation is not an EXCUSE to rob, never said it was. But if a kid has no money and no prospects, believe me, he is going to consider doing something illegal, dealing drugs or robbing, stealing because the world is telling him he is a loser without money. All this “pull yourself up b y your bootstraps” is fine if you have a little familial support. If you have nothing what then.

I think that’s just what they do when they have a 10 sentence story and need to fill up a webpage with it.

I have the greatest respect and sympathy for these grandmas. They are of the Old School and inherit the mistakes their granddaughters make. Helluva thing to go through in your old age after having earlier paid your dues as a parent.

“ok, maybe you all are completely without mercy here.”

Sanctimonious much?

If your heart were broken, would you be giving press interviews? I can guarantee I wouldn’t. If I were heart broken, I’d barely be able to speak.

But, oh, no, this granny has to hold a presser and lay out the standard script about his being a good boy turning his life around. Right. What about other mothers, grandmothers, fathers and families who could have been mourning had Davis and his friends killed any of the bar’s patrons?

Lots and lots of people have had ‘bad breaks’ in life. MOST don’t choose to walk armed and masked into a bar, attempting a hold up.

yeah well I am a compassionate conservative not one of the hardhearted ones. Each person is born through deliberate thought of God. I do not rejoice when someone turns to satan or when satan’s minions hurt good people, either one.

And big deal if you wouldn’t have a press conference. Maybe she didn’t intend to have a press conference, maybe the vulturous press arrived at her door sticking their microphones in her face wanting to know how she “felt” about it all.

And I wonder how many innocent lives were saved by taking this guy out so early? It could well have gone the other way.

You have to feel for the family’s grief.

But this man was shot during the commission of a violent felony, and it should happen more often.

He has no excuse, and no legitimate complaint (if he could still make one). Your misfortune doesn’t obligate anyone else to stand still and be robbed.

So you maintain that you have an obligation to let him rob you? Read my post. I didn’t say you said he had an excuse; I said he didn’t have one.
