Conservatives vs. Capitalism
National Review ^ | 1/9/2012 | Jay Nordlinger

Posted on 01/09/2012 6:24:44 PM PST by americanophile

The last two presidential election cycles have revealed a stinking hypocrisy in conservatives: They profess their love of capitalism and entrepreneurship, but when offered a real capitalist and entrepreneur, they go, “Eek, a mouse!” And they tear him down in proud social-democrat fashion. In the off season, they sound like Friedrich Hayek. When the game is on, they sound like Huey Long, Bella Abzug, or Bob Shrum.

Last time around, Mike Huckabee said Romney “looks like the guy who laid you off.” Conservatives reacted like this was the greatest mot since Voltaire or something. To me, Romney looked like someone who could create a business and hire the sadly unentrepreneurial like me.

Others said, “He looks like a car salesman,” or, worse, “a used-car salesman.” Ho ho ho! Commerce, gross, icky, yuck. Better Romney looked like an anthropology professor.

As I say in Impromptus today, I was watching a clip of Romney tangling with an “Occupy” protester last week. Romney was defending corporate profits. I was astounded. I don’t think I had ever seen a candidate do this. When the subject comes up, you’re supposed to denounce corporate profits or say, “Hey, nice weather we’re having, huh?”

Phil Gramm once explained to Bill Buckley why he never talked about free trade on the stump — he, a professor of economics and a free-marketeer: It wasn’t worth the trouble. “Free trade benefits almost everybody,” said Gramm. “But they don’t know who they are. Free trade hurts a few, and they all know who they are.”

>> I’m disgusted by the anti-capitalist, Marxist/socialist class warfare rhetoric being used.

There’s nothing wrong with bitch-slapping agents of hostile take overs — if that’s what you’re referring to.

Proponents of “anything goes” in the World of business are usually those that have no experience in starting or running a business. The virtues of Capitalism extend far beyond the balance sheet, and anyone that believes otherwise can go # off.

I'd vote for Karl Marx over Romney if Marx could guarantee an end to legal abortion in America. Mitt is bad news and his robber baron abuse of the free market is just part of the problem.

From wiki:
Hostile takeovers
A hostile takeover allows a suitor to take over a target company whose management is unwilling to agree to a merger or takeover. A takeover is considered “hostile” if the target company’s board rejects the offer, but the bidder continues to pursue it, or the bidder makes the offer directly after having announced its firm intention to make an offer.

DO YOU UNDERSTAND THIS DEFINITION. It is only considered hostile because management is opposed to it. To the “little” people who actually own the company it is not hostile - it is someone giving them more for their investment. Yet you invoke “honesty” like a libtard.

I wonder if many of the freepers here are really anti-liberty or if they just need an education in how venture capital works and why it is better than central planning. I think they fear what they do not understand.

More anti hostile takeover talk from a freeper who doesn’t even know what it is and why it is GOOD for the “liitle” investors. Check wiki for a quick definition.

I have no intention of making an excuse for that idiotic statement. Newt’s made plenty of them.

My issue is with idolizing the manipulation of corporate value as some form of capitalistic virtue.

We probably don't disagree, but that's a discussion for people who understand the nuance of capitalism. Given that the rhetoric in this country has become nakedly socialist under Obama, the wholesale adoption of it by Republicans is absolutely suicidal.

"A more useful point of attack against Romney, would be to assault the narrative of him being a so-called entrepreneurial businessman..."

It's pretty clear that's the ultimate question. But in order to get there one needs to be somewhat apprised on Bain Capital's history. And to most out there, it reeks of the kind of over-leveraging that gave us the bank bailouts.

We are doomed. One of our so called own stated on this thread that they would rather have Socialism if abortion was illegal. Kind of like Ceacescu’s Romania. If two years ago someone told me that the GOP’s candidates would be attacking the free market I would thought you were crazy, but here we are, brought to us by rhetorical suicide bomber Newt. I do not want big government serving the interests of the Looney Left or serving the Social Issue Right. I want them both out of my pocket. As stated in the article, most conservatives only support the free market in abstract, but in real life they are just Statists also.

The author’s missing the point with his remark about people likening Romney to a used car salesman. No conservative is down on the automobile business, for God’s sake. But used car salesmen gained a reputation for lying (often with good cause - I know first-hand). And THAT’S what people mean about Mittens - he’s disingenuous.

“Let’s see how Romney stands up to this during the primaries not afterward, when it’s too late.”

Onyx, you’re right on (as usual :-) These are exactly the tactics and attacks the BHO machine will use if, God forbid, Mittens were to get the nomination.

Hang in there, Newt!!!

“That being said, Romney is a disgusting anti-capitalist when he gets into political office. His reign in Massachusetts was not even close to being a sterling example of free-market capitalist political policy, it was nothing more than mainline progressive liberalism.”

Excellent point! Bears repeating.

Oh stuff it.

Corporate raiding and pillaging, such as firms like Bain Capital engaged in, is not free market capitalism.

These sort of bottom-dwelling scumbags have no interest in management of firms, production or distribution of goods or services, or any other constructive enterprise.

Scum like Romney destroy. That's it. There's no "managing" involved -- just theft and destruction.

And there is nothing "conservative" about the practice.

Wrong, hedge funds are nothing more than gambling, with the manager playing the part of bookie. Adds no value to any transaction. And if you claim it is insurance it is not, no insurable interest. Whore houses are more honest than hedge funds.

You are suggesting Bain should have paid higher prices for the companies they took over? If so, why?
