Conservatives vs. Capitalism
National Review ^ | 1/9/2012 | Jay Nordlinger

The last two presidential election cycles have revealed a stinking hypocrisy in conservatives: They profess their love of capitalism and entrepreneurship, but when offered a real capitalist and entrepreneur, they go, “Eek, a mouse!” And they tear him down in proud social-democrat fashion. In the off season, they sound like Friedrich Hayek. When the game is on, they sound like Huey Long, Bella Abzug, or Bob Shrum.

Last time around, Mike Huckabee said Romney “looks like the guy who laid you off.” Conservatives reacted like this was the greatest mot since Voltaire or something. To me, Romney looked like someone who could create a business and hire the sadly unentrepreneurial like me.

Others said, “He looks like a car salesman,” or, worse, “a used-car salesman.” Ho ho ho! Commerce, gross, icky, yuck. Better Romney looked like an anthropology professor.

As I say in Impromptus today, I was watching a clip of Romney tangling with an “Occupy” protester last week. Romney was defending corporate profits. I was astounded. I don’t think I had ever seen a candidate do this. When the subject comes up, you’re supposed to denounce corporate profits or say, “Hey, nice weather we’re having, huh?”

Phil Gramm once explained to Bill Buckley why he never talked about free trade on the stump — he, a professor of economics and a free-marketeer: It wasn’t worth the trouble. “Free trade benefits almost everybody,” said Gramm. “But they don’t know who they are. Free trade hurts a few, and they all know who they are.”

Spoken like the lowest class of socialist known to man. Why don’t you go to DailyKos or some place to plan your commie revolution?

LOL. You do not like my criticizing the "small globalist elite"? Who do you think underwrites the Daily Kos? Who do you think is financing cultural marxism in the media and the academy?

Well said. We’ve opened up the debate to the nature and ultimatley the acceptability of capitalism as an economic model. The nuance between different sytles of investment will all be lost; we’ll be fighting to explain and defend it’s very morality and existence now - Obama and his socialists could not be happier.

A hedge fund is, in the simplest terms, like a mutual fund in many ways except that it does not have the asset class restrictions that a mutual fund does. The other major distinctions are that only wealthy people/sophisticated investors are permitted to invest in them and that there are fewer disclosure requirements.

And how is this gambling? One of the biggest users of hedge funds is pensions funds as hedge funds are often the most effective way to diversify a stock portfolio due to their low correlations with traditional assets.

Your opinion, is your opinion, the world will not end if you put hedge-funds in the backroom of the whore house, beside the leaking john.

Fine - how would you like it if what you did for a living was criticized for no reason by fellow freepers?

I’m not suggesting anything. Take my post at face value.

I am sorry, but I am sure the local cab company has a driver opening and it is honest work.

I figured that Nordlinger and the other closet liberals would be doing handstands about Romney being their candidate and the conservatives abandoning ship. Aside from McCain, Romney is the epitome of a cheap ass liberal that all the elitist, Party Boy snots love.

As for the OWS comparison for conservatives, please, if anything Romney and the establishment have more sympathy and feeling for the OWS kooks than any conservative. They want everything the OWS want just on the cheap.

Nordlinger, hey you elitist have repeatedly stabbed conservative candidates in the back and now we stand up and say no more support for liberals and you can’t understand why we are upset.

Anxiously awaiting the always favorite establishment line to come in this thread: but if you don’t vote for our limp wristed liberal wuss candidate, obama will be re-elected!

I have heard it since 1988. When Romeny is defeated in the general election it will be the conservatives fault. If he should win conservatives will be told to STFU and go back to the back of the bus.

I hate the ideal of a third party but the game is rigged from beginning to end by the establishment. When this defeat hits us between the eyes its time for conservatives to walk en masse from the party. Yeah we are going to lose elections, but we are anyway with these statist fools in charge, so why not enter the game with a solid front against the liberals.
