Define "Apocalypse"

What if the Mayans were right when they predicted that the world was coming to an end in 2012?

Some people are always prepared for the apocalypse. Last year, a group of misguided Christians believed the end was nigh. A dozen years ago, Y2K was all the rage. Back when the Mayans were making predictions, so were the Essenes, a reclusive Jewish sect during Christ’s time on Earth. They thought the final battle between good and evil was coming any day now — more than 2,000 years ago.

Today, some people in the Arizona desert are reportedly preparing for the earth’s destruction. Anyone can use the Internet to find survival gear and rations for stockpiling.

I’m going to go out on a limb and officially predict that the world will not come to an end in 2012. But for many financial analysts, perhaps the key issue in predicting worldwide disaster is that it all depends on what definition of “apocalypse” is used.

An honest look at hard financial data indicates that an economic Armageddon may, indeed, be on the way. The sovereign debt crisis gripping Europe and the U.S. should be enough to make the prudent start to prepare for tough times ahead.

“For the first time in recorded history, no fewer than five major Western nations — Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece and Spain — are now edging toward default,” Martin Weiss, chairman of the Weiss Group, warned in October. “Nobody knows precisely when the first default will be announced, and the first shoe could drop at virtually any moment.”

International pressure is building to move the U.S. and the leading industrialized nations toward a global economy, in which all will rise or fall together, weighed down by their collective debt.

Massive catastrophes DO happen on occasion. Be it as abrupt as whatever ended the dinosaurs or Noah’s flood, or as gradual as a[n| mini] ice age or expansion of the Sahara, or as deliberate & social as extermination of several chunks of the 100,000,000 lost to 20th Century politics, disastrous stuff happens. The degree of survivability may vary.

Point is all these actual events, coupled with human propensity for making & believing predictions, mean something “apocalyptic” _will_ happen - albeit depending on your definition thereof, timescale involved, and how close you are to not surviving it.

And, dang it, predicting & fearing & preparing for “the apocalypse” is FUN.

Narrator: How can he possibly resist the maddening urge to erradicate history at the mere push of a single button? The beautiful, shiny button? The jolly, candy-like button? Will he hold out, folks? Can he hold out?

Stimpy: No I can't! Yeagh!

As a Bible student I associate this with a rather favorable event, that is, when Jesus Christ is unveiled, or revealed, as to who He really is and the esteem in which He is held by the Father.

The unveiling of Christ as to who he really is as well as our purpose on earth is the subject of "One of God's Days" (1909) an all-but-forgotten hymn by Walter and Civilla Martin which is one of my favorites:

One of God's days, those who are now
Faithful to Jesus in life's constant maze
Soon shall see light; then will they know
All of life's meaning one of God's days.

One of God's days, beautiful days,
We shall in glory sing his praise.
Fighting all done, victory won.
We shall see Jesus one of God's days.

I remember the lecturing we Americans were getting from the EU’s biggest promoters in Europe, about their “better way”. They kept telling us, and themselves, that yes, initially, there would be some big public and private capital transfers, from north to south, underwritten by EU guarantees, to “lift” the lesser developed new EU members up to standards of it’s strongest members.

Then, with the backdrop of the current EU financial crisis. I read a Wall Street Journal article today that was saying how yes, there are examples of those EU-backed plans all over the southern tier nations, like for instance hundreds of miles of gorgeous new highways traversing Italy, known today for their modernity and beauty, and for how few cars are on them.

I then reflected on the lectures, back in the 2001-2005 period, we Americans were getting from our own “experts” on how we needed a EU-style government aided capital transfer plan, just like the EU’s, to raise the living standards and finamcial health of Mexico. I wonder where those American “experts” are today.

Yes, it is. And much of it is definitely on purpose in order to satisfy an agenda.

The Mayan calendar just indicated and end of one cycle and the beginning of the next.

That's what I thought.

The MAYANS didn't predict the end of the world.

Lots of ignorant newsputzes have turned it INTO that, but the MAYANS didn't predict anything.
