Madison - Gov. Scott Walker's administration is seeking more authority from the federal government to go after fraud in the state's food assistance program.

The state currently has the power to investigate fraud committed by participants in FoodShare, the $1 billion program largely funded by the federal government that serves as the successor to food stamps. But as of now only the federal government has the authority to pursue fraud cases against retailers, something that Wisconsin officials want to change.

Something weird is going on in Wisconsin.

Here in Michigan, we are audited on a regular basis for food stamp fraud! We even have an Office of Inspector general that goes through cases to make sure that only qualifying people receive that benefit. A waiver or permission from the feds has never been required! Does WI depend on FoodShare and/or food stamps being 100% federally funded? If so, this still doesn’t make sense.

Medicaid fraud in MI is another story.

MI OIG has qualification and review.

Gov. Walker is trying to tackle FoodShare fencing fraud by retailers. After-the-fact fraud by 'retailers' (bodegas, Uncle Mohammed's, etc.), ie, what people do with their food stamps for cash.

As you probably already know, it's a huge problem in the Rust Belt.
