If you imprison people, they will act like prisoners.

“Some kids just don’t have the proper mindset or temperament for organized sports.”
My 12 year old daughter plays in a community basketball league. This year they decided to put together 2 all girls teams instead of mixing the teams.
My daughters team is 7 and 2. They play a game in the morning against a team they already beat pretty badly. One of the boys on this team is bigger than alot of men and he is angry and violent.
He got tossed out of the game when they played my daughter’s team beat. He almost took one of the girl’s head off throwing a temper tantrum on the court. You could see his anger level rising the whole game.
He isn’t a great player but he uses his size to intimidate. My daughter is a good rebounder and she wasn’t intimidated by him. In fact, none of the girl’s were intimidated by him and he couldn’t handle it.
I am worried about a repeat tomorrow. I heard he has been benched for further ugly behavior but they are allowing him to play tomorrow. We only need one win to play for the championship and his team needs two wins. I hope he doesn’t get desperate and get angry.
BTW, I have been really proud of my daughter’s sportsmanship. We were actually laughing about it a couple of weeks back. Two of her best friends play on the other girls team. She was guarding her friend against making a shot but her friend made it anyway. She jumped up and down and clapped for her friend even though her friend scored against her. It was quite cute.
Anyway...make sure there is a very large man in attendance with you at this game so he can intercede and handle Mr. Big Stuff should he "go off". Nothing like a good smackdown to set a bully's mind right.
If it were me at the game and I saw something like that, I would not hesitate no matter the later consequences.
I'm 6' 4" and 240lbs. I don't stand for young men acting disrespectfully towards girls. I don't care who they are.
She is a great girl. She lost her game today by one point. The big boy punched 3 of our girls in the faces and trampled one of our other girls throwing her an elbow to the back of the neck. Noone saw it during the game but the girls reported it. I went to his coach who took him out for about 2 minutes. We saw it later on video. He was very sly. Oh well! They played hard and they ALL handled it with grace.
The other girls team (two of my daughter’s friends) had their game stolen . They were up by 2 points. Last two seconds of the game and the other teams ball. The boy walks 3 1/2 steps before shooting at half court for a 3 point shot. They did not call his walk and it cost the girls the game. Everyone in the stands on both sides were perplexed. Even the other coach said it wasn’t right. But they handled it with grace as well.
The boys and their coach had their heads hung because they knew they didn’t really win it. It was sad for both teams. I really felt bad for their coach. This boys team played with alot of dignity though. They played hard but not like thugs.
Good life lesson. Life is not always fair. When it isn’t, you just hold your head up and do the right thing! All in all, 7 and 3 is a great season!
BTW...what the heck is a boy (and a moose of a one at that) doing on a team that plays against girls? These teams are co-ed?
They worked really hard. 5 of our 8 players had never played before this year. So winning 7 was quite an accomplishment. The league coordinators told us early in the season not to worry if we didn’t win any that the girls would leave the season having grown a lot. It is a community league by age. They usually mix the teams but for some reason this year they decided to have 2 all girls teams. It was fun except for this one boy. He caused trouble in every game he played.
