Not that I support Romney because I don’t but could you explain why a liberal backed a conservative over a liberal who was the overwhelming favorite at the time?

Romney does not take chances. The man is completely risk averse, and never sticks his precious neck out for anyone. If he supported Marco Rubio in his Senate race, he either

A) knew that Rubio was a faux conservative just like him, and was playing 'scratch my back and I'll scratch yours', or

B) had inside knowledge that the game was about to turn for Crist, and he simply picked the assured winner to burnish his own non-existent conservative credentials.

Pardon me for butting in, but I will happily answer your question, as a long time Florida resident and voter.

Charlie Crist was NEVER a Republican favorite, much less an “overwhelming favorite” at any time, in any mind but his own, and other former Democrats who cowardly abandoned their party to socialists and communists.
RINOs have been dropping like dead flies for a reason.
