I agree with that. I think he's shrewd politician side wins, in the political arena. At the same time, I think his personal beliefs are generally decent.
His political side and personal side are in tension and conflict, all the time. I don't think he cares about reconciling the two; and I don;t think he has any obligation to do so. He's a party man, first -- see endorsement of Specter, another social liberal.
At the end, it doesn't matter. He's not that influential. Just a point of interest to fuel entertaining speculation.
It does matter when 2/3rds of his voters say Newt is their second choice.
