And Souter doesn’t cancel out Thomas? Because he literally does just that every time. Bush lost because he broke the “no new taxes” pledge.

People forget a 3rd party Republican ran in 1980 and Reagan still won, with less than 50% of the vote.

The Dems got trounced in the House by Newt in 1994. Why was Clinton suddenly a lock in 1996? Didn’t take long for Newt to get the country on the right track I guess.

Souter was a big boo-boo, no doubt. His biggest mistake, in my opinion.

The “no new taxes” thing is a side show.

In 1980, it wasn’t a 3rd party Republican, it was a 3rd party Democrat, Scoop Jackson.

Clinton was lock in ‘96 because Newt and company overplayed their hand, and it’s a pity they did. I appreciate the things Newt did, but he had the country on the right track and then blew it, putting Clinton back on offense when they had him on the ropes.

That, plus Slick Willy was smart enough to know where the winds were blowing.

Hate to tell you, but Reagan got over 50 percent in 1980.
