Twitter has announced that it now has the technology to selectively block tweets on a country by country basis.

In its blog, Twitter said it could "reactively withhold content from users in a specific country".

But it said the removed content would be available to the rest of the world. Previously when Twitter deleted a tweet, it would disappear worldwide.

In its blog post, Twitter explained that its international growth meant entering countries "that have different ideas about the contours of freedom of expression", citing France or Germany which ban pro-Nazi content as examples.

Didn't see this on search. Yet I know it is important - many people here use Twitter to get the word out.

Proxy servers? One can appear to be in any nation that has one.

Good, reliable proxies are hard to find, but might work.

What a carefully crafted statement! Nice contouring Twitter. The commies, fascists, and muzzlems will be VERY happy with you.

The unspoken part? For a price... eeevil laugh. I like it when everyone assumes they mean other countries, but I would like everyone to keep in mind how much the media is controlled here as well. We have even lost Fox news to the control of the lefties.

Don’t know how important this is to you - I don’t use twitter - but I know your stand on censorship of freedom of speech, so a courtesy ping to you.

Presumably when they mention “France and Germany’s” laws prohibiting Nazism, they really intend “China’s” prohibition on discussion of human rights &c.

I just deleted both my accounts on Twitter. I hope someone comes up with something similar without the censorship and I will gladly sign up for that!

Why couldn’t they have named it something manly, or at least neutral? What could sound more sissy/gay than TWEETING on TWITTER?

When the SHTF, it’ll be censored or shut down anyway.
