A reflection of this sense of ownership was evident in his take on last Saturdays South Carolina primary, which Gingrich won.
We havent had time to do a real analysis of the Romney race in South Carolina, but once we break that down, there was some element of anti-Mormonism in that vote, McCain asserted. Im not saying all of it, but there were elements there. There was nothing that Mitt Romney could have done.
Could that bias, if it exists, extend beyond the Palmetto State to others in the South if the primary drags on? Im not sure [but] I dont think so, McCain said, pointing to Georgia as one place he doesnt believe would hold Romneys religion against him.
McCain cited the possible anti-Mormonism in response to a query about the growing Tea Party support Gingrich has begun to draw, particularly in Florida.
The Arizona senator doesnt believe that support will be lasting because Gingrichs record doesnt track with issues dear to the movement, he said.

As one of the so called “anti-Mormons” on FR, I wouldn’t vote for Romney even if he were an Evangelical Christian. His record shows he is a liberal.
Wow. That's got to be the most amazingly ignorant post I've read in a long time. Good job! There must be some kind of kewpie doll for bigoted posts like that!
McCain is only hinting at the reality if the Mormon factor. It is, in a sense, the “X” factor: unknown because it has never been studied before, and most people when polled, refuse to admit to any religious or racial bias.
If the GOP-E goes ahead and nominates Romney, and the truth about the beliefs and goals of Mormonism become more widely known, many, many, people will say no.
You just claimed that anyone who doesn’t follow YOUR group is a kook, and YOU accuse ME of a liberal mindset ???
Hypocrisy much ?
Christians voting their conscience, should be praised by Republicans, McCain condemns it.
After you read below what Mormons spread around the world in hundreds of languages, and preach 24/7 on Lds.org Web site and in books, multi-media, curricula and missionary convos...can you blame them that a true-believing Mormon doesn't exactly "inspire" them to vote for him?
Mitt Romney, Dec, 2007, speaking @ the George Bush Presidential Library: "I believe in my Mormon faith and I endeavor to live by it. My faith is the faith of my fathers I will be true to them and to my beliefs."
