LENOIR, N.C. – The father of a 10-year-old disabled girl who was murdered by her stepmother in western North Carolina has been deported to his native Australia.

Attorney Shell Pearce says his client, Adam Baker, was deported roughly two weeks ago by the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

Pearce says Baker brought the remains of his daughter, Zahra, with him for burial in Australia.

Adam Baker moved to North Carolina in 2008 after marrying a North Carolina woman he met online. Elisa Baker was convicted of second-degree murder last year in the death of Zahra, who

He did murder and cut then up the body of his daughter, spreading her ‘parts’ over several counties.

“10-year-old disabled girl who was murdered by her stepmother”...not the father

According to the article, he wasn't the one convicted of the muer, but Elisa Baker was.

There is no mention of his involvement in the killing.

Just because you are the victim of a crime doesn’t mean you get to stay forever

Horrible writing:

Elisa Baker was convicted of second-degree murder last year in the death of Zahra, who had a prosthetic leg and hearing aids from a battle with cancer.

^^^
What in the heck does that sentence actually mean?

While Baker was not involved in the murder of his daughter, he is guilty of some much more minor, but still relatively serious crimes involving fraud, identity theft, and assault that came to light during the murder investigation. It was decided not to imprison him on compassionate grounds, and also to drop some remaining outstanding minor charges - he is seen as a victim of crime as well, having lost his daughter - but to instead immediately deport him to Australia. He planned to come back here anyway to bury his daughter, the deportation simply means he won’t be allowed back into the US at a future date.

Whaaa? That’s not what I read. As I understand it, his wife did it, and was convicted of 2nd degree murder.

What am I missing here? If he was in on it, why was he deported rather than sent to jail, too? Or better yet, why isn’t he sitting on death row?

Now I’m really confused.

At a guess, Zahra had had bone cancer in her leg which required amputation, and suffered hearing loss from the chemotherapy.

Of course, even with that stated more clearly, it would still be a badly written sentence.

If that is the case, good riddance. Pity we can’t just drop off all of the criminal element somewhere...on a smaller, more isolated island...
