New Santorum ad hits Gingrich on his idea for a moon colony
HotAir ^ | 12-3-12 | Korbe

Earlier this week, the Rick Santorum campaign reminded potential voters that Newt Gingrich has made more than one “deal” with liberals. Today, his campaign released a new minute-long satellite radio ad that pinpoints the problem with Gingrich’s fanciful idea to build a moon base: We simply can’t afford it.

“Reckless spending has led to a 15 trillion dollar national debt … And what does Newt Gingrich suggest? Spending half a trillion dollar on a moon colony,” the ad says.

Gingrich received criticism from the comment he made last week in Florida, and Team Santorum uses it in the new spot to paint the former Pennsylvania senator as the true conservative in the 2012 race.

“Rick Santorum, he doesn’t just talk a good conservative game, he lives it,” ...

The spot also features Gingrich saying, “When we have 13,000 Americans living on the moon, they can petition to become a state.” That kind of idea makes for great audio, but the ad’s broader point — that Santorum remains relentlessly focused on the debt — would be as true if the spot tackled the two candidates’ plans for entitlement reform rather than Gingrich’s more extreme moon proposal.

I have no problem with a candidate dreaming BIG......Rick would do better to stay positive and tell us why he should be our pick. Pathetic campaign.

I really do not like labeling someone with a name, but you’re just asking to have your mental abilities labeled.

Go ahead. I'm not one of the pandering little cowards who fears opposing something that is complete and utter crap because the popular kids will laugh.

“...under the international outer space treaty its the property of the whole world...”

And therein lies the role of our government. The Chinese intend on ignoring the treaty, just like the Russians are on the brink to deciding.

It is time the treaty was torn up. That is what governments are for, cripplecreek.

WHAT THE HELL DID HE DO WITH ALL THAT MONEY?????

OFA, ACORN, SEIU, AFSCME come to mind. Don't forget the $1B he'll have on hand for his campaign. I don't believe for a minute there hasn't been some cash laundering.

If you don’t have a vision for the future you get lost in the past.

Either we turn away from our social security/medicare/food stamp future that consumes everything or we change direction and become bold again.

I don't mind Rick at all, if he won I could support him fully.

I do have a question, why isn't Santorum trying to take down the front runner? (the phony who claims to be conservative that doesn't have anything conservative about him)

His best chance of a pick up is from people who have been fooled by Mitt's electability and conservatism, yet he spends money on ads against Newt.

Puzzling.......

bizarre how a guy who is running in third , has not won one county and a voting group in the last 3 states goes after the guy in second place,

Either he is running to become second or he is running to take Newt out.

Or maybe Santorum has a plot, a cunning plan which no one has ever seen before in their life.

I wonder who Santorum will support if he is forced to drop out (by poor showings or lack of funds).

It’s looking like it would be Romney which would make every good thing he’s ever said or done meaningless.

Lil Ricky has as much chance of being Romney's VP as Ron Paul does, zero.

What a great ticket that would make, they would both lose their home states.

“Why is Rick lying?”

Because he is exactly what many of us suspected.

Whatever Rick’s good qualities may be; he is a man w/a very narrow view of the world. He is clearly out of his league; but, too proud to admit that to himself. The result of his hubris may well have an calamitous effect upon the future of this country.

Rick cannot win; but, even if he could; at best, he would only be capable of managing the decline of our Republic.

He’s going after Newt because he knows the total conservative vote, coalesed behind one candidate can beat Romney. He wants to take Newt down so he can be that single conservative candidate.

He’s hoping to make that case apparent in Missouri where Newt did not make the ballot and he figures it is just him vs Romney. If he wins there he will start making the case for Newt to get behind him.

Sadly, both of them are stubborn and proud enough that they will continue to split the vote for far too long, IMHO. It really needs to stop before Super Tuesday.

I’m puzzled by why Newt supporters have gone right down the line and accused every other candidate but Newt of working for Romney and then fell silent when they turned around and endorsed Gingrich despite the fact that it only seems to be helping Romney to do so.

Looks more and more like someone running for the VP slot on the Romney ticket.... WHAT A JOKE!

Rick is just another power-lusting Statist. Rick is staying in for one reason -- to be Mitt's VP. Rick has NO concern for reigning in government or Liberty in general.

Anyone who coldly looks at Mitt knows he would be a total disaster for our Republic. Yet little, whiny, geekly Ricky seems to be trying his best to only knock out Newt. Interesting.

I, also, am far from being opposed to space exploration, and I share your concerns about the 'treaty' you mentioned. Additionally, I think that in the short-term, we have a lot of other things we should be spending our money on than establishing a moon colony by some date certain.

I would have had NO problem whatsoever if Mr. Gingrich had pledged to provide funding and resources to NASA for begin working on establishing a moon colony. However, given the enormity of some of the other challenges we face as a country, promising to actually have a moon colony by a specific deadline was short-sighted and foolish, in my opinion.

So much for “Playing the SPACE CARD”, as a means of buying votes with the promise to spend taxpayer money.

Amazing; and desperate for some publicity - to remind his people, he is still out there?

Other than that; Newt needs a beautiful; inspiring response; as rebuttal; every time this is thrown at him; as t why moon, Venus ET AL space exploration is critical; and beneficial; and can only help secure our 'place in space'. Rather than be under the dominance of those - certainly some enemies - who will be there; while we remain literally, subservient and 'beneath them'. National Security includes 'space'.

Thank God; Kennedy and the rest of patriot Presidential Leadership that unfolded in the sixties; did not look through this self-defeating; nation-defeating;American-spirit defeating prism.

I seriously wonder if Santorum actually listened to Newt explain the moon thing or is taking advantage of the knee jerk reaction many had when they first heard this. Newt plainly said he'd like to see a program that was 90% privately funded and maybe the government involved at a 10% level. Newt is talking about fundamental restructuring... i.e., changing the way we've done things in past.
