The electronic do not have to be on, the physics is over my head but what happens is small electrical wires are over loaded and burn out. Solid circuitry with there very small wires do not stand a chance. Most electronic these days is solid circuits. but even larges wires will burn out as someone earlier pointed out the great solar storm of the late 1800s burn up telegraph wires. An EMP attack would be stronger then that. The fiction novel 1 Second After supposes 3 bombs which take out all electronics in the entire USA. Then things get really ugly.

A Faraday cage for "must have" electronic is a very good idea if you are a preper. The trunk of a car would be an OK Faraday cage.
