MILITARY: Website of Wuterich's lawyers hacked

Mark Walker

February 3, 2012

A hacker group known as Anonymous took responsibility Friday for defacing a website and stealing files and emails from attorneys who represented Camp Pendleton's Frank Wuterich in a case involving the deaths of 24 Iraqi civilians.

Wuterich's lead attorney, Neal Puckett, confirmed the intrusion and apparent theft from him and his partner, Haytham Faraj.

....Snip....

Puckett said he has filed a complaint with the FBI over the hacking.

The group that got into his website says it plans to release information it found about the Haditha case. Puckett said he is equally concerned about the theft and possible release of confidential matters between the attorneys and all their clients.

Yep, the little punk is a prime example why the repeal of DADT was a major screw up, the touchy feely stuff isn’t going to cut it.

Not sure, but I believe you can get them all into a folder on your PC, then use Google to search just that folder for terms. There was a big push for Google Desktop a few years back, with an added toolbar to the browser. My company disallowed toolbars because of security concerns, so I have naught but what I’ve read of info. Any other ideas?

Here’s something that looks like the Google thing you’re talking about....

So far, this Anonymous group fits the Haditha pattern: extravagant claims but nothing’s there.

>>>So far, this Anonymous group fits the Haditha pattern: extravagant claims but nothing’s there.<<<

Barrett Brown, an informal spokesman for Anonymous, said “The guys who did this are the best we have,”

Here’s Barrett Brown’s twitter feed

I get the impression these Anonymous twits would faint dead away if they ever had to stand face to face with a Marine.

Thanks, smooth.
That looks similar but different. ;^)

Seems there you have to UPLOAD your files before manipulation; the one I recall allowed searching for specific terms prior to uploads. That way Red could cull the ones he needs without putting his data at risk in the Wild Wooly Web.

I've no doubt you're right, wouldn't surprise me if Brown and Manning are related.

There are very few Word documents. Most are html, PDFs, and bin files which I don’t think a search tool could read.

I’d like to post a piece on DOM that all this was bust. But I really don’t want to antagonize hackers. Maybe I’m a chicken but they used to say, never argue with a man who buys ink by the barrel. The contemporary version would be, never argue with a man who can steal your data by the gigabyte.

>> It’s a massive amount of material. I’m already going blind and I haven’t seen anything of any significance.

LOL, I envision you on a caffeine drip with bloodshot eyes, and smooth hosing down his squirrel cage with a fire extinguisher.

Hahahaha! You got the picture!

This whole thing was a bust for Anonymous--except the collateral damage they've created for a law firm and its clients. Those clients include rape victims (whose personal information is now public) and detainees at Gitmo (doesn't that make Puckett on the same side as the hackers?).

I don't want to minimize the damage to Puckett & Faraj. I hope they've both already changed their Social Security numbers and banking information because their tax returns and bank loan information is now on the Internet. And it will be a while before they are able to do business.

But related to Haditha? No one has turned up anything relevant yet. The best they can do is post silly e-mail blasts to Puckett from Don Greenlaw and his buddies that are similar to some Free Republic posts about ways to kill Muslims.

I got off Greenlaw's e-mail list years ago and I can't understand why Puckett didn't delete his e-mails. Bloggers are using those e-mails to suggest that people involved with the case were a milimeter away from going on a murderous rampage. But that's just more mud-slinging and shouldn't stick.

The only thing I've found related to Haditha that was news to me was this tidbit about DELA CRUZ. It's not much but a brief view into his character.

Further to the post above, Anonymous captured e-mails as Puckett et al discovered the hack.

Puckett's wife (and the firm's business manager) Marcy Atwood said: "This could destroy the firm."

It's posted HERE.

That line about “abundance of caution” is pretty funny coming from Gannon, Sullivan, and co.

Thanks for the synopsis.

The exposure for the clients is extremely unfortunate.

The situation smells, and it’s hard to accept the narrative on face value. I guess the feelings for Haditha are more complex than I thought. To be honest, I didn’t think many people followed the Haditha story.

Thanks for your work and the info, Red. It looks like you’re correct that this hack won’t mean much to SSgt Wuterich and the other Haditha Marines cases but it sure is sad the grief it’s going to cause Puckett & Faraj.

Yeah, that’s the one where he warns Congressman Allen West that their correspondence has been compromised.

Speaking of LtCol West, this is still by far my favorite Neal Puckett e-mail...
