Catholic Church Rejects Surrender Terms from Obama
http://www.aim.org ^ | January 30, 2012 | Cliff Kincaid

"My Catholic priest, Father Larry Swink, delivered a homily on Sunday that I told him would make headlines. In the toughest sermon I have ever heard from a pulpit, he attacked the Obama Administration as evil, even demonic, and warned of religious persecution ahead. What was also newsworthy about the sermon was that he cited The Washington Post in agreement—not on the subject of the Obama Administration being evil, but on the matter of its abridgment of the constitutional right to freedom of religion.

What is happening is extraordinary and unprecedented. The Catholic Church is in open revolt against the Obama Administration, with Fr. Swink noting from the pulpit that priests across the archdiocese were joining the call on Sunday to rally Catholics to resistance against the U.S. Government. He said we are entering a time of religious persecution and that Catholics and others will have to make a final decision about which side they are on.

The issue is what the Catholic Bishops have called [1] a “literally unconscionable” edict by the Obama Administration demanding that sterilization, abortifacients and contraception be included in virtually all health plans.

At a time when the media are full of reports about who is ahead and behind in the polls, and who will win the next Republican presidential primary, this incredible uprising in the Catholic Church is something that could not only overshadow the political campaign season, but also may have a major impact on the ultimate outcome—if Republicans know how to handle it. This matter goes beyond partisan politics to the growing perception of an unconstitutional Obama Administration assault on religious freedom. To hear the Catholic Bishops and Priests describe it, our constitutional republic and our freedoms hang in the balance".

There's the rub. Who do the GOP insiders want to run against the pro-abortion, pro-gay Obama, who thinks that the best thing to do with children, the disabled, and old people is to kill them? None other than the pro-abortion, pro-gay, child-killer Mitt Romney. And they really believe that their base will vote for that S.O.B.

I live in a politically conservative but religiously liberal town. This was not even being whispered among the congregation last week at the Catholic Church here. It will be interesting to see if anything is said by anyone tomorrow.

This must may get me back to my old church.

To declare Obama as evil is certainly true, even without considering abortion.

This is the most depressing aspect of this election. The most liberal statist in US history, in the White House and Romney is the one who may be chosen to replace him. Its just depressing to think about.

looking forward to what will be said my self in the morning.

There are about 5 or 6 Democrats who will be running for the white house in about 2.5 years from now. It would be a smart idea to get their thoughts right now on this. We know for instance where Nancy the Catholic stands. Bookmark Her for later use, but ask the rest of them now, Andy Cuomo, Catholic get him on the record now.
It’s fun to get them squirming. Necessary as well.

Dear Catholic Church:

Pack the courts with lawsuits.
Let them play whack-a-mole for a change.
It’s the only language they understand.

Regards SB.

Where are the other churches? It seems like most of them have been as quiet as church mice. Do they think that because they support birth control this doesn’t affect them? Do they think that there will never be a time when the government might try to force them to do something against their principles? Or are they just happy that the Catholic Church is the target and haven’t thought through the implications?

Problem with the Catholic Church is that they FULLY supported all of Obamacare and yet because they didn’t obtain an exemption from this particular mandate they are now pissed. Would they be so pissed if they had obtained that exemption but others didn’t?

In August this idiot is going to say, “Sebelius was wrong and I’m overturning her ruling.” Then all the stupid liberal Catholics that voted for him the last time will vote for him again. Played like a cheap flute.

“...and haven’t thought through the implications?”

Unfortunately this has been the case for many decades...the churches have not thought through the long term effects of Social Security, medicare, public school, etc. They have seen these programs as good because then the church did not need to offer help in these areas as much...more money for larger buildings, more staff, and higher salaries. But these programs have helped to form our culture into one that turns to government instead of the church for help...big mistake.

Darn good question! Don’t know the answer, but I can add that my take on most of the U. S. bishops is that they’re criminally credulous. They of all humanity should mistrust political designs for man’s perfection.

FWIW, the American Protestant churches were the first to start moving that way. There was an an American novelist around the end of the 19th century named Winston Churchill, who wrote a bunch of historical novels, from the earliest days of our country through his own time.

I forget the name of it, but he wrote one novel about a Protestant minister with an upper-class congregation who fell for the same delusion—that the government should take care of the poor instead of private donors. And then the recipients don’t have to feel bad about being “objects of charity.” Instead of being objects of charity from snarky socialites who wanted to look good to their friends, they would have a right to receive the basic necessaries from the government. And then the minister wouldn’t have to go around begging his richest congregants for handouts.

Evidently it started in the 1890s, and of course took on much great speed with FDR his successors. No doubt it sounded good—but big mistake!

“FWIW, the American Protestant churches were the first to start moving that way”

I agree and they are the ones I was mostly referring to. I have been in leadership in both Catholic and Protestant churches during my life but only in Protestant churches for the past 25 years so I would not feel qualified to comment on the Catholic church. I have seen this behavior first hand and from several different church leaders...

It will be interesting to see if anything is said by anyone tomorrow.

Each weekend there are 4 Masses at the local church. The first Mass is on Saturday evening.

The priest gave his homily (sermon) about the scriptures read today, in addition he spoke about The Obama Administration mandate. It straight forward and to the point that the church could not comply.

After Mass ushers hand out the weekly parish bulletins. Today a one and one half page letter from the bishop was included with each bulletin. In the nine paragraph letter The Obama Administration and/or President Barack Obama was used 4 times.

An excerpt from that letter, in heavy bold print:

We can not--and we will not--comply with this unjust law. I call on all Catholics in our diocese to act now to seek the immediate reversal of this rule.

It appears that nun Sister Carol Keenan, with the apparent approval of the church and it’s bishops, gave Obama cover for the passage of Obamacare with the implied assurance that the church would receive the appropriate exemptions. Thus a ‘something for me but not for thee’ arrangement where the church obtained what it wanted but everyone else could go ‘to hell’. What’s the saying—lie with dogs, get up with fleas. The church’s ‘righteous anger’ rings hollow.
