My thinking is possibly the presser was to divert Mitt’s thunder or find another excuse not to call and congratulate the winner ? Supporting Newt mostly as a protest vote, but he really is going to have to find a more mature game plan for these post defeat moments or the rumors of being too mentally unstable to play within systems of established protocol (like the presidency) will only intensify.
