I’ve read thru the thread thus far ( 50 some posts ) and I’d like to echo all of the “pray” responses.

There is strength and power in prayer. I know, preaching to the choir but sometimes we do need a simple reminder and sometimes just reading that short sentence is very uplifting to say the least.

For your consideration:

Ephesians 6:12-17 (NIV)

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,

15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.

16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

This is what was called upon me to reply for right now.

This is a fantastic thread and blessings to you for starting it.

I look forward to reading more replies and perhaps adding in a bit more myself.

>>we have family and land in another state, 500 miles away...
there’s your first answer -

You do not want to be living in a city when things break loose...and it’s too late to make plans afterwards<<

This is also my advice...along with prayer.

-- But when "they" said executive committee members also had to pay an additional amount of money, I balked. --

All that is at an annual banquet? Is attending and/or sponsoring the banquet a requirement for holding a position?

Same concerns from this mom of a recent college grad and high schooler. I too, have never worried - for our country and, subsequently, my family - like I have for these past three years. I always say it seems like we've woke up in a nightmare, Bizarre-o world. It saddens me that my kids will likely never know the country we grew up in. My oldest gets it, but the younger one thinks I worry too much.

My faith and my family are what keep me sane...and FR!!

Thanks for starting this thread. Lots of great advice, lots of great commiseration and companionship.

May God bless and keep America and stand beside us to guide us.

Would you mind pinging me as well for the thread that will explain some of what is going on ?

I’m curious to see it.

Thanks ~

I said to resign from their ranks, not their brotherhood. But since you didn't like my first reply to your question or feel that I may be splitting hairs here's another: Quit employment where your wages are taken from taxpayers at the point of a gun.

The Constitution of the United States of America structured a government for what the Founders called a “virtuous people - that is, a people who would be able, as Burke put it, to “put chains on their own appetites” and, without the coercive hand of government, to live peaceably without violating the rights of others. Such a society would need no standing armies to insure internal order, for the moral beliefs, customs, and love for liberty motivating the actions of the people and their representatives in government - the “unwritten” constitution - would be in keeping with their written constitution.

I was going to bed... however, I was reading through the comments again, and I cannot do anything but re-read and re-read your post above... for is this not what our country is about?! What has happened? Why do people not understand? Oh! Because we are human... God help us!

OOH!! Help me understand this one! I have a calling, as I see it, to be a teacher - since I was 10-years-old and read about Anne Sullivan and Helen Keller. I now have a job that pays well, after many years. What is it, exactly, you are suggesting I do?

I think that of all the offers of advice you’ve been given in this thread, you will do well to ignore what emmanates from the self-righteous who want to lay guilt-trips on you (if you _allow_ them to). :)

And do what to earn a salary that will support my family? I am rewarded, in many ways, by teaching mathematics to 7th graders!

Hi Lyby,

You and I are the same age, and I too have three college kids (all boys). And I too live in a big city and have all the same concerns.

My response was to begin to prepare for some possibly very difficult times. This means having to learn how to put back dried white rice and pinto beans, vacuum-sealed in mylar bags and stored in food-grade plastic buckets (there are some great YouTube videos on this). This means putting back other basic foods like large jars of Peanut butter, raw/unfiltered honey, sugar, salt, spices, etc. It means keeping a lot of canned foods on hand and drawing from them occasionally so they never go bad (lots of canned foods easily have a shelf life of two years or more!) (SUGGESTION: Designate one night per week as "Eat from the Pantry Night" - *everybody* loves Ravioli and Denti Moore Chili!).

It means knowing the difference between dehydrated foods, freeze dried foods and MREs, and the proper use for each.

It means learning about guns and how to use them (if you Freep Mail me I'll give you some good, cost-effective gun/ammo recommendations so you don't have to invest too much time in this).

It means dedicating oneself to becoming more physically fit (I personally believe throwing Frisbee is one of the best exercises to prepare for difficult times - and it has the virtue of being enjoyable and CHEAP!)

It means developing plans and lists, and identifying criteria for "bugging out" if you have a destination (which you do). [HINT: The time to bug out is when you feel certain the dollar is about to become worthless - the reason is because this is when law enforcement will stop doing their increasingly-dangerous job.]

It means learning about basic sanitation.

It means understanding about how to filter and purify water.

It means obtaining first aid supplies and some good books on the subject (I highly recommend the books "When there is No Doctor" and "When there is No Dentist"!)

It means trying to gather with others who share the same concern and to begin networking.

I started doing these things about three years ago, and it was one of the best things I've done in my adult life.

Oh, and one more thing...it means hoping that you never have to use all this stuff! If, however, this disaster does happen, it means that, on the other side you and the next generation are going to be paying a *lot* less into the welfare extortion racket. It means you're going to live a better, more rewarding life.

What this nation is going through is analogous to feeling nauseous before you throw up. After it's all done and past the first thing you're going to say is ... "Hey, I'm feeling pretty good now!"

I run a disaster preparedness group here in Central Florida that gets together once a month to discuss and share knowledge on this subject. I'm also working on a book on disaster preparedness. Feel free to Freep-mail me with any specific questions, and I'll be happy to answer.

“Self-sufficient?... we live in a city. we have family and land in another state, 500 miles away...”

Kudos to you. Just make sure to have your “bug-out” bag ready and a reliable / feasible means of escaping the city when the “fit hits the sham”.

We live in L.A. and just bought a motorcycle, because if it all falls apart, the only way out of Metro L.A. is via the freeways, which will be backed up for miles and miles. The only feasible means to escape will be via motorcycle (weaving in, out and between cars on the freeway). Motorcycles are low-maintenance and are much for fuel efficient that cars or trucks, plus ours can carry additional fuel, bug-out bag, shot-gun, hand guns and plenty of ammo, and can pull small trailer for additional supplies. (I ain’t kidding neither.)

Thank goodness our daughters go to college out of state in a rural area.

I do not want to be a “politician”. I could have afforded the extra money, but it pi**ed me off that the money and time I was already contributing was not enough!

Dear Lyby:

Economically, we are in a long-wave contraction; a decade-long period of historic deleveraging and wealth contraction. It will not get better, it will get worse. In their 3Q 2011 Macroeconomic Report, Salient Capital Partners in Houston gave a shocking overview of what's ahead. If you google Vienna Initiative and look at what the Chief Economist of the EBRD is saying, the king pins of money are all bracing for the WORLD'S economy to go to hell in the near future. This is not tinfoil hat material, my friend. It's an economic period we must survive - not a single event from which we must recover.

With this a@@hat in the White House, and his progressive/socialist buddies running the show, it will be a madhouse when the wheels finally come off the bus completely.

Dr. Manning Marable, in an open letter to the Socialist Review, bragged that Obama surrounded himself with communists and independent marxists, and has them in his administration. This lion of the LEFT was boasting about it before his death. Here's a direct link to the article.

Before hyperinflation really sets in, start stocking up on food. Food prices have jumped anywhere from 25% to 50% over the last year. Butter used to cost $2.00; it's now $2.98 by me. Whatever is on sale, that your family already likes to eat, buy an extra CASE every time you go shopping. Make it a priority purchase. Encourage those you love to do so, as well. Soups, nuts, canned veggies and fruits, PB&J, crackers, stuff that lasts, is easy to prepare (requiring only a pot and heat), and LOTS OF WATER. Lighters, candles, guns, ammo, food, and bottled water (get the 2 gallons jugs), ways to stay warm, light, heat. Oh, yes, and don't advertise it to anyone. Seriously, get a weapon, a ton of ammo, and learn to use it.

If you have anything in savings, pull a little out and start your stockpile. Seriously, start reaching out to neighbors you know and trust and build coalitions. Together, you can defend your community. Alone, you are sunk.

You will need enough for at least 40 days. At that point, most of the animals will have taken each other out or formed their groups. Hopefully, you will have formed your group, too.

Most of my street could survive a Zombie Apocolypse. Do I think it will get that bad? Sure as heck hope not. But the America of today does not resemble the America that survived the Great Depression; it's godless, morally bankrupted, government dependent, and ignorant of history.

Just hedging my bets and protecting my own. Insurance, you might say, with a powerful punch.
