I'm hoping Republicans will soon wake up, stop fighting among themselves, and realize that Mitt Romney has the best chance of becoming the nation's next Ronald Reagan.
Everybody remembers Reagan for his single-mindedness in cutting federal spending and taking the government out of the central position in everyone's life. What they forget is that it was Reagan's temperament that made all this possible.
Think back to Reagan's famous rejoinder to JimmyCarter in their first and only debate, "There you go again!" What was the significance of that? Carter had just finish a long, beady-eyed recitation about national health insurance, which, he said, promised "not inpatient care but outpatient care" with "an emphasis on hospital cost containment," and how CandidateReagan, of course, was opposed to all this because he had opposed Medicare in 1964. Reagan stood shaking his head and laughing the whole time and when it finally came his turn, he sighed, "There you go again."
The audience laughed and why not? Carter's expressionless, robot-like recitation typified his whole presidency. He was obsessed with details. Reagan's genial response was that when he opposed Medicare in 1964 it was because he favored another piece of congressional legislation that relied less on government. But in a single moment, Reagan had also revealed Carter as a narrow-minded pedant while he was an affable, good-natured leader capable of keeping things in perspective. Voters liked what they saw and that ended Carter's Presidency.
MittRomney has a very similar temperament. In fact he had a "There-you-go-again" moment in the last debate when RickSantorum launched into his inevitable fulmination about how Romney will never be able to debate President Obama on Obamacare because of Romneycare. Romney gave his usual rejoinder but then added, "It's nothing to get angry about." That's the kind of perspective a President needs.

Agreed.
Reagan had principles. Willard does not.
Obvious political hack writer is obvious.
Thanks! I needed that!
I tried, I really tried. I couldn't get past the first sentence.
It's nothing to get angry about unless you are a conservative that actually cares about the Constitution. I seem to remember Reagan getting a lot of attention when he got angry and snapped at Nashua Telegraph editor and acting debate moderator Job Breen.
If the eGOP keeps cranking out this ridiculous propaganda, conservatives will feel good about casting their write-in votes for “None of the Above.”
My feelings exactly! I doubt that I hear more than 20 minutes of talk radio a year since 2008, and Fox is completely gone.
If serious tyranny comes to our nation, Rush and the other yappers will sell their talents to the fascist oligarchy. They will spit shine the jack boots crushing our necks.
If Romney can be the next Reagan then I, the great RipSawyer can be the next Moses, the next Einstein, the next Mozart, the next Charlemagne, the next Mark Twain and a brain surgeon to boot. With proper training Romney MIGHT be able to shine a pair of Reagan’s old shoes...maybe.
You see...there is no more....looking at their record, what they have done. The media is supposed to show us these things and let the American people decide, but nooooo! Now we a media on TV and online that try to sway elections.
Anyone in their right mind knows this is the biggest steaming pile of $hit. The right and the left are trying to rewrite Reagan’s legacy. It’s disgusting.
I heard some other conservative commentator whom I usually respect say that Romney's family demonstrates his commitment to family values.
Big whoop! Mussolini had a large family.
I thought he didn't want to be the next Reagan?
Romney the next Reagan? I feel like I am in the twilight zone. Can’t these people see that Romney is a fraud? Just watch, before the primary is even over Romney will start running back to the left. And many will suddenly see him for what he is, a power hungry political hack willing to say or do anything to get the nomination.
A weak and pre-planned comment from Romney. Santorum did not seem especially angry at the time, but Romney figured he ought to use the prepared line. He's not a natural like Reagan; he's just well-coached.
Also, the prepared line DID NOT SELL to the Republican audience and it never will. Okay, maybe the GOPEE.
Thanks for this thread.
” - - - Romney will never be able to debate President Obama on Obamacare because of Romneycare. Romney gave his usual rejoinder but then added, “It’s nothing to get angry about.” That’s the kind of perspective a President needs.”
Uh, William “Moderate Sucker” Tucker, we are not “angry” about socialized medicine, we are beyond the pale furious about RomneyObamney Nationalization and National Debt Generator “Care” by either “Moderate” Mitt, or Bolshevik Obama.
BTW, Moderate-Sucker-Tucker, just what “kind of perspective” would be needed to actually reduce the the size of the spendaholic steely beast called the US Federal Government?
There is something that bothered me when the grandchildren were broght on stage. Yes there were many of them. Yes they were adorable. BUT they all wore the identical Nellie Olson hairdo.
I hated her. You would think at least one of them would try to look a little bit like Laura.
;~)
I remember Ronald Reagan... Romney is no Reagan.
This writer thinks it is comparable to "There you go again"?? not even close.
Romneys, "Its nothing to get angry about" was nothing more than Santorum was hitting the truth over and over about MANDATES and wouln't let up, Romney had no where to escape, and the MOD caught the drift real quick, on to next issue.
We all caught what Mitt and the MOD did at that time. Not in this lifetime will Romney ever wear Reagans boots. Besides Reagan was a Christian.
Michael Steele after Florida was on TV saying the proportional rule of April 1 was passed during his term and FL must abide.
The current President of RNC wrote FL a letter in Dec stating that the delegates should be allotted proportionately.
FL flipped them the finger and like any liberal did what they wanted.
Now the RNC has two choices to keep the issue from blowing up when the Rules Committee meets (just days before the convention).
Either
1. Call an emergency session now and deal with FloriDUH
OR
2. Push Romney down the throat of the American people so that he wins in high enough proportion that it's no big deal.
They've chosen 2. What do We the People say. T-shirt posts have the information you need to give the RNC your thought.....Speak early and often.
Please forward the information to your email list and ask others to continue the message. Thanks.
IMO Reagan drafted his famous 11th commandment proactively, with nasty, destructive campaigners exactly like Romney in mind.
Since 2008 Romney’s machine has destroyed Sarah Palin. Herman Cain. Rick Perry. Now it’s tearing down Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum.
One can only hope, if this scorched earth sleazeball succeeds in buying, sliming and attacking his way to the GOP nomination - he’ll use as much viciousness against the communist/democrat opposition.
The only data point I’ve seen in this regards though, was John McCain.
Who only ever actually tries to beat, other Republicans.
I’m not hopeful Mitt Romney would be any more helpful.
Not one bit.
