In the 1960s, William Buckley drained what had been the swamp of anti-liberal politics from numerous groups: libertarians, objectivists, conspiracists, Old Right isolationists, etc. Buckley is no longer with us, nor is Reagan. The ex-Democrats who allied with conservatism in the 1970s, the so-called neo-conservatives, and the Religious Right have faded in influence and political power. Irving Kristol and Jerry Falwell have passed on. The electoral base created by Reagan is aging. The reclaimed land is reverting to swamp land.

I don't hold Ron Paul fully accountable for this phenomenon, any more than Robert Taft, Douglas MacArthur, and Joe McCarthy were fully culpable for the racists, conspiracists, and anti-Semites among their supporters. All four men were and are better than their fringe elements. Nevertheless, all four inadequately disciplined those fringe supporters. For example, General MacArthur, while deeply conservative, was no anti-Semite. However, his senior staff (e.g. General Wedemeyer) was filled with officers who believed that the Jews were collectively responsible for the world's ills.
