Pete Wilson endorses Mitt Romney

Former California Gov. Pete Wilson today endorsed Mitt Romney for the GOP nomination, part of a rising move within the party to rally around the frontrunner. Romney has made a big effort to line up high-profile endorsements, although several notables, such as former Florida Gov. and conservative darling Jeb Bush, have remained neutral. Wilson, although considered a conservative in California, is viewed as fairly moderate within the current GOP.

In his endorsement statement, Wilson called Romney “an enthusiastic believer in American exceptionalism” and called him “a spectacular example of it.”

(American exceptionalism is a term traced back to Frenchman Alexis De Toqueville and now de rigueur among modern conservatives, that the United States is unique among nations, in a good way, in contrast to their view that liberals like to denigrate American ideals.)

Wilson cited Romney’s experience as governor of a Democratic state and his electability in his endorsement statement, implying perhaps that such Romney alternatives as Newt Gingrich might damage the party’s down-ballot prospects:

No surprise there. When I was 25 I learned the definition and power of GOP kingmakers and RINOs, when the kingmakers promoted Pete Wilson as the gubernatorial candidate for California (Deukmajian got it).

No, Romney won’t damage GOP down ballot prospects, like Gingrich would, oh no.
No, Romney isn’t unelectable, like Gingrich is, oh no no.

Can’t these guys come up with something original to scare republican primary voters with?

Wilson called Romney “an enthusiastic believer in American exceptionalism” and called him “a spectacular example of it.”

Yea Pete, whatever. Has any Romney ever put on a uniform in service of our Country?

Those who have served in uniform are a much greater example of exceptionalism.

The only thing spectacular about Mitt is his ability to lie and pretend to be a Conservative, while keeping a straight face.

Stinking Pete Wilson RINO.

He was a disaster as governor. But - he did do one really good thing while in office.

After the big earthquake that knocked down the freeways at the north end of the San Fernando Valley, he told the state highway agency (CAL TRANS) that they would NOT be given the rebuilding job (they estimated four to five years to rebuild.)

Wilson took bids from private companies, and offered one millon per day for every day they were under three months rebuilding. The company that got the job finished 5 days early (something like) - and collected a hansom reward which they shared with their employees.

Q: How many RINOs does it take to screw a conservative out of the White House?

A: How many you got?

You must have forgotten - Wilson was governor - replaced by Deukmajian, a real conservative.

I fought Wilson hard - and beat his butt. He tried to pack the state party with RINO's at the state election convention. He spent something like 3 mil on the campaign, giving lavish parties to promote his candidates.

I ran the first 'war room' using computers at that state convention - and we beat Wilson, completely. He didn't get even one of his RINO's elected to the state party structure.

First of all, that’s not what “American exceptionalism” means.

But even if I go with poor stumbling Pete Wilson’s idea of it, I have to say that the only exceptional thing about Romney was that he was born rich and into a politically powerful family who were members of a closed and powerful cult - and managed to make lots more wealth and gain much more influence through his contacts. Oh, wait, that’s not even exceptional...

Now if Gingrich, an Army brat, had done this, I would probably agree that it was exceptional. But there’s nothing exceptional about Romney except his level of deceit.

Milt has all the "conservative" ducks in a row--Pete Wilson, John McCain, Donald Trump, Chris Christie, etc. All the "rock-ribbed" conservatives have jumped on board the "moderate train."

You must have forgotten - Wilson was governor - replaced by Deukmajian, a real conservative.

Deukmajian replaced Jerry Brown in 1982, re-elected in 1986.

You're right! There was that bit of homo-socialist pos in office in between. Now he's baaaaack!

Far too many moved out of this state - rather than fight to save it.

I'm giving up too - moving to Arizona as soon as possible!

From the crooked RINOS who stole conservatism’s last chance to save California in Tom McClintock by running Arnold Schwarzenegger on the claim that he was a “fiscal conservative.” He then bankrupted California and handed it to the Slave Party.

No big surprise here. “Pete” Wilson was to California what George HW Bush was to the US. Wilson was the guy who “reached” up and pulled “FLUSH” handle and started California’s trip down to the Hole(it’s ALMOST there(the hole) now). GHWB “gave(foitsed)” the US 8 years of Klintoon. Wilson “gave(foitsed)” Grey Davis, Ahnold and IDIOT MOONBEAM Brown on California.
