We shouldn’t depend on police (fellow) humans to take on all fearful duties, we’re the armed citizenry that defends our country afterall. We’ve just demurred for too long now and that’s let the whole society down.

Exactly. This is a good news story and instead of beating up on Detroit, we should be encouraging more of it. While we're at it we should be honest in admitting that there are plenty of neighborhoods just as bad in cities across the country.
