Republicans are pushing a proposal that would halt what amounts to an IRS-administered entitlement that provides free-funds to low-income illegal immigrant filers who take advantage of a child tax credit to receive government payments that average about $1,800.
The proposal would require people filing tax returns to prove theyre legal workers. The effort has roused anger among Hispanics and some Democratic lawmakers. But its being offered as a way to help pay for extending the payroll tax cut and is projected to trim federal spending by about $10 billion over a decade. The IRS checks average about $1,800.
The debate addresses a quirk in U.S. law. Even people who are not authorized to work in the U.S. are supposed to file returns with the IRS. Many of those people cannot obtain a Social Security number, so to facilitate this the IRS hands out what are known as Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers so illegal workers can file returns.
However, in doing so many of those workers are claiming tax benefits. For some, its a way of making even more money. The IRS pays the tax filers, which for some amounts to an IRS-administered welfare program.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada says the proposal unfairly goes after the children of poor Hispanic workers. Such kids often are U.S. citizens, even when their parents arent, because they were born in this country.

What’s the score on Republicans getting anywhere with their ‘targeting’ anything?
Series, do we have a list of ‘wins’?
Good question. You could at least argue that they’ve had some military and budget victories in the past...
Illegal aliens deserve what their country of origin offers...they deserve nothing from U.S. citizens. If LA RAZA has an issue, they should take it up with the Mexican Embassy.
The GOP never does what it says it wants to do. Even when they controlled all 3 branches of government they didn’t do anything conservative
That’s because once they’re in power, they’re afraid to lose it. They then start listening to pollsters and other hacks, who tell them ‘what voters like.’
For some reason, they seem to forget that every single party that wins an election, ends up losing one as well in the future, pretty much no matter what they do. That’s how it works. You win some, you lose some. That’s reality.
What they’ve got to do is simple: when in power, govern like freaking conservatives. If that means that you’ll lose elections (I happen to think they’ll make you more, rather than less popular, but whatever) so be it. At least you know you served your country’s interests.
bump!
